General Mills (GIS) shares advanced approximately 1.2% in premarket trading Wednesday, reaching around $35.86 following the packaged foods company’s first-quarter results that exceeded Wall Street projections for both profits and revenue. The stock had settled at $35.45 on Tuesday and has tumbled roughly 24% year-to-date in 2026.
The Minneapolis-based food manufacturer behind Cheerios posted adjusted first-quarter earnings of $0.75 per share for the period ending August 30. The figure surpassed the analyst consensus of $0.72, though it represented a decline from the $0.86 reported in the comparable quarter last year.
Revenue dropped 2.8% from the prior year to $4.39 billion, though this narrowly exceeded Wall Street’s projection of $4.35 billion. Company executives attributed the revenue contraction largely to the divestiture of its yogurt operations in the United States.
Revenue Performance Remains Key Investor Concern
Organic revenue, which strips out impacts from business acquisitions and disposals, remained virtually unchanged compared to last year’s quarter. While this suggests some degree of stabilization, the company’s core division continues facing significant headwinds.
The North America Retail segment recorded a 6.6% sales decline to approximately $2.45 billion. The company found some offsetting strength internationally, where sales climbed 4.5% to $794 million, while the North America Pet division delivered essentially flat performance.
Over the past twelve months, General Mills has pursued a strategy of price reductions and enhanced value propositions as consumers have grown increasingly cost-conscious regarding food purchases. Leadership has simultaneously launched new product lines targeting categories including high-protein foods, fiber-rich options, convenient snacks, and premium pet nutrition.
Company executives have indicated that recent retail performance metrics show signs of improvement, with customers demonstrating positive responses to several new product introductions. Chief Executive Jeff Harmening characterized the beginning of fiscal 2027 as promising while recognizing that market conditions continue to be unpredictable.
Margin performance continues facing pressure. The adjusted gross margin contracted by 90 basis points to 33.3% as elevated raw material expenses partially negated the company’s efficiency initiatives.
Fiscal 2027 Projections Unchanged
General Mills left its fiscal 2027 guidance unchanged, projecting organic revenue growth ranging from a 1.5% contraction to a 0.5% expansion. The company continues to anticipate adjusted earnings between $3.00 and $3.20 per share.
Management also forecasts adjusted operating income to decline between 8% and 13% on a constant currency basis. These targets had previously been confirmed during the company’s presentation at the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference on September 8.
Market participants are weighing the quarterly performance that topped estimates against the stock’s troubling longer-term trajectory. Shares have declined more than 11% over the trailing month and approximately 24% since the beginning of the year, reflecting investor anxiety over tepid demand and profitability challenges.
Primary headwinds include subdued consumer spending, escalating labor and commodity expenses, competitive pricing dynamics, and the risk that the company’s product innovation strategy may require more time than anticipated to generate meaningful revenue growth. While the earnings beat provides some reassurance, organic growth hovers near zero.
For the present, market participants appear cautiously optimistic that quarterly performance cleared expectations without necessitating another downward guidance revision. The most recent development centers on General Mills’ choice to preserve its fiscal 2027 projections notwithstanding lower reported revenue and persistent challenges in its North America Retail business.
