Stripe has reportedly secured a deal to acquire OpenRouter for over $7 billion.
The acquisition price significantly exceeds OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation from earlier this year.
This transaction positions Stripe to move beyond payment processing into AI infrastructure services.
OpenRouter offers a unified platform allowing developers to access hundreds of AI models seamlessly.
The combination could create an integrated platform merging AI routing, transaction processing, and automated payment systems.
Payment processing giant Stripe has reportedly finalized an agreement to purchase OpenRouter in a transaction exceeding $7 billion. This acquisition would position Stripe as a major player in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market, gaining control over a platform that connects developers to numerous artificial intelligence models. To date, neither organization has issued official confirmation of the transaction.
Payment Leader Finalizes Multibillion-Dollar AI Deal
According to a Bloomberg report, Stripe concluded the acquisition following multiple weeks of intensive negotiations with OpenRouter representatives. The announcement comes after initial reports surfaced regarding discussions between the two companies over a multi-billion-dollar transaction. If completed, this acquisition would rank among Stripe’s most significant purchases in company history.
OpenRouter operates as a unified access point for developers seeking to connect with AI models from various technology providers. The platform enables users to seamlessly transition between different models depending on factors such as pricing, speed, reliability, and specific use-case needs. This eliminates the complexity of establishing individual integrations with each model provider.
Beyond model access, the platform handles transaction processing, intelligent routing, and automatic failover capabilities. These features ensure applications can seamlessly switch providers during service disruptions or outages. This functionality has positioned OpenRouter as critical infrastructure within the expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem.
AI Startup Sees Valuation Surge Fivefold
In May 2026, OpenRouter completed a $113 million Series B financing round. Following that investment, the startup achieved a post-money valuation of approximately $1.3 billion. Stripe’s reported acquisition price represents more than a fivefold increase over that recent valuation.
The Series B round was spearheaded by CapitalG, with participation from prominent venture capital firms focused on technology investments. Notable investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, ServiceNow Ventures, and previous financial backers contributed to the round. Prior funding rounds had already elevated OpenRouter’s estimated worth beyond $500 million throughout 2025.
During this period, OpenRouter experienced dramatic expansion in platform usage and processing capacity. The company disclosed that it handled approximately 25 trillion tokens weekly as of May. This figure represented a fivefold increase compared to weekly processing volumes measured just six months prior.
Payment Processor Makes Strategic AI Infrastructure Move
Stripe has been diversifying its business beyond conventional payment processing as companies increasingly develop autonomous digital commerce systems. The payment processor has already invested in developing transaction capabilities designed specifically for software agents that purchase data, computational resources, and online services. Acquiring OpenRouter would significantly extend Stripe’s capabilities beyond financial transactions into AI model infrastructure.
OpenRouter currently provides developers with streamlined access to hundreds of different models through a single, standardized application programming interface. The service supports numerous providers while giving users flexibility to customize routing preferences. Stripe already serves as a payment infrastructure provider for countless technology companies operating in diverse digital sectors.
This reported transaction could create a comprehensive platform merging AI model routing with payment processing and billing services. Such unification could enable autonomous software agents to independently select appropriate models and execute payments for digital resources. Stripe has not yet revealed any specific product integration plans for OpenRouter following completion of the reported deal.
Acquisition Builds Upon Established Business Partnership
Prior to acquisition negotiations becoming public knowledge, Stripe and OpenRouter maintained an existing commercial partnership. OpenRouter relied on Stripe’s payment infrastructure to handle customer transactions for its AI services. This existing relationship provided Stripe with firsthand visibility into OpenRouter’s growing developer base and expanding transaction volume.
Initial media reports had suggested that acquisition discussions might value OpenRouter at approximately $10 billion. The latest reported agreement, however, establishes the transaction value at more than $7 billion. Despite being lower than early estimates, this price still represents a substantial premium over OpenRouter’s May valuation.
Stripe has not publicly addressed whether OpenRouter will operate as an independent entity following the acquisition’s completion. Similarly, OpenRouter has released no information regarding potential changes to its vendor-neutral positioning. Regardless of operational details, the reported transaction positions Stripe at the center of infrastructure powering next-generation AI applications.
