Digital asset-linked equities dominated Friday’s trading session as Bitcoin’s upward momentum propelled Coinbase, Robinhood, and Strategy to significant gains. Meanwhile, streaming giant Netflix experienced selling pressure from analyst downgrades, and Warren Buffett shocked markets with his unexpected departure from Berkshire Hathaway.
Equity index futures posted modest gains during Friday’s pre-market session. Declining crude oil prices combined with renewed investor confidence in the Federal Reserve’s inflation-fighting approach helped sustain Wall Street’s momentum following the central bank’s policy announcement.
The Federal Reserve implemented its first interest rate increase in over three years. Market participants demonstrated resilience, with continued buying activity overshadowing rate hike concerns.
Digital Securities Approval Catalyzes Crypto Stock Rally
The Securities and Exchange Commission granted approval for tokenized versions of traditional securities to commence trading on U.S. exchanges. This regulatory milestone triggered broad-based gains across the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Securitize surged 9%. Coinbase climbed nearly 3%, Robinhood advanced 3.6%, and Strategy posted a 3.9% gain. Additional crypto-related names including Circle Internet Group, Riot Platforms, Galaxy Digital, Hut 8, and Hyperliquid Strategies recorded increases ranging from 2% to 7%.
Bitcoin’s price appreciation provided additional momentum to the sector. Market participants appeared unfazed by the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy adjustment or the failed passage of the Clarity Act.
Artificial intelligence-related stocks also demonstrated resilience on Friday. Corning, Intel, Coherent, and Lumentum all recorded gains during pre-market hours.
Intapp shares appreciated 3% following the company’s announcement of a strategic collaboration with OpenAI. The integration will make its AI-powered tool, Celeste, accessible as a ChatGPT Enterprise plugin, specifically designed for legal practices and other highly regulated sectors.
Streaming Stock Declines While Berkshire Chairman Steps Aside
Netflix fell 2.8% to $73.20 after Wells Fargo issued an Underweight rating on the streaming service. The financial institution simultaneously reduced its price objective from $80 to $57.
Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares showed little movement following the company’s announcement that Warren Buffett would resign from the chairman position effective immediately. Howard Buffett, his son, will assume the chairmanship.
Among declining stocks, Xenon Pharmaceuticals tumbled 27%. The biotechnology firm suspended new patient enrollment in two clinical trials evaluating treatments for major depressive disorder and bipolar depression following reports of neuropsychiatric adverse reactions.
Xenon characterized the enrollment pause as temporary. The organization is evaluating dosing modifications and confirmed that currently enrolled participants will maintain their treatment protocols. The company’s focal seizure trial remains operational without interruption.
Nucor and Steel Dynamics both declined 2%. The steelmaking companies released third-quarter earnings projections falling short of Wall Street analyst forecasts. Nucor provided guidance of $5.55 to $5.65 per share, while Steel Dynamics projected $5.34 to $5.38 per share.
Both earnings outlooks missed consensus analyst estimates. While elevated steel pricing and record shipment volumes provided positive factors, disappointing raw materials segment performance negatively impacted forward-looking projections.
