Equity futures showed positive momentum Wednesday morning as robust earnings from artificial intelligence companies provided market participants with confidence before a crucial inflation data release.
Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.5%. S&P 500 futures increased 0.2%. Dow Jones futures remained essentially unchanged.
This upward movement came after major indices experienced declines for two consecutive sessions. Market participants had been adopting a wait-and-see approach, anticipating new economic indicators.
Strong AI Sector Performance Boosts Sentiment
CoreWeave, Lumentum, and Super Micro each delivered quarterly earnings that surpassed Wall Street forecasts. These results demonstrated persistent appetite for artificial intelligence infrastructure investments.
According to Deutsche Bank macro strategist Henry Allen, the earnings “led to renewed optimism on the AI trade.”
Super Micro specializes in server design for AI-powered data centers. Lumentum manufactures optical networking equipment essential for rapid data transfer. CoreWeave operates as a cloud computing provider specializing in GPU-intensive applications.
These positive earnings results helped improve market sentiment during overnight trading, despite ongoing caution across broader equities.
Inflation Data Takes Center Stage
Market attention is firmly focused on Wednesday morning’s July consumer price index release. Analyst consensus predicts annual headline inflation at 3.4%, declining from June’s 3.5% reading.
On a monthly basis, CPI is projected to increase 0.1%, following a 0.4% decrease in June. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy components, is anticipated to show a 0.2% month-over-month gain.
This data release carries significant weight as the Federal Reserve evaluates potential rate adjustments at its mid-September policy meeting.
Recent weakness in employment data has already diminished expectations for a September rate increase. However, an unexpectedly strong inflation reading could revive those possibilities.
With markets trading near all-time peaks, investors remain particularly vulnerable to any deviation from expected outcomes.
Middle East Conflict Supports Crude Prices
Geopolitical developments continue influencing market dynamics. Negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding Strait of Hormuz access have reached an impasse.
Iran is insisting on unfreezing financial assets and American disengagement from regional disputes. President Trump has countered by demanding Iran provide reparations.
Brent crude extended gains for a sixth consecutive session, approaching the $90 per barrel threshold.
Houthi forces claimed responsibility for an assault on commercial vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that resulted in six fatalities, including four cargo ship crew members and two Yemeni rescue personnel. Separately, the U.S. Navy neutralized a Panama-registered ship operating near the Gulf of Oman.
The confluence of diplomatic deadlock and renewed attacks on critical shipping routes has maintained upward pressure on oil prices and heightened investor anxiety before the inflation report.
