The company delivered adjusted earnings of $1.45 per share, representing a significant increase from $1.26 in the prior-year period and surpassing the Street’s forecast of $1.39. Total revenue expanded 14% year-over-year to $9.76 billion, comfortably exceeding analyst projections of $9.55 billion.
Performance across all business segments exceeded market expectations. The company joined industry counterparts Abbott and Boston Scientific in delivering quarterly results that topped analyst forecasts.
The cardiovascular division, representing Medtronic’s primary revenue source, delivered particularly impressive results. Segment revenue surged 19.5% to reach $3.93 billion, powered by remarkable 88% expansion in the pulsed field ablation product line, which treats cardiac arrhythmias.
The company disclosed that approximately $570 million of the quarter’s revenue increase stemmed from an additional reporting week included in the period.
Management also upgraded its fiscal 2027 projections. The organic revenue growth target now stands at 7.25% to 7.75%, representing an upward revision from the previous 6.75% to 7.25% range. Full-year adjusted EPS guidance was tightened to $5.94 to $6.00, with the midpoint exceeding Wall Street’s expectations by two cents.
Strategic $700M Robotics Partnership
Beyond the quarterly financial performance, Medtronic executed a significant strategic maneuver in the surgical robotics sector that could prove more consequential for long-term investors.
The medical device leader unveiled a $700 million strategic investment securing exclusive distribution rights for Cornerstone Robotics’ Sentire surgical platform across specific international territories outside the United States.
The company intends to market the Sentire platform in conjunction with its current Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system. The Hugo platform already competes directly against Intuitive Surgical’s market-leading Da Vinci robotic system.
Shares of Intuitive Surgical slipped 0.2% during premarket trading Tuesday.
According to Medtronic, the dual-platform strategy will “expand access to robotic-assisted surgery and offer surgeons and health systems more choice and flexible solutions.”
Further Investments and Spinoff Performance
The company additionally announced an $80 million stake in Pi-Cardia, a developer of heart valve repair technologies, along with an option to complete a full acquisition for $210 million.
MiniMed, Medtronic’s diabetes management division that was separated last year and commenced public trading in March, also delivered strong quarterly results. MiniMed’s net sales increased 17% to $843 million, exceeding the analyst consensus of $826.8 million.
MiniMed shares advanced 1.4% in premarket activity.
Prior to Tuesday’s trading session, Medtronic stock had declined 5.6% year-to-date. The premarket rally positions the shares to reclaim a substantial portion of those losses.
With quarterly cardiovascular segment revenue of $3.93 billion, this division continues to serve as the company’s primary growth engine as fiscal 2027 progresses.
