Etsy stock experienced a 2.9% surge in Tuesday’s premarket activity following Oppenheimer’s decision to upgrade the shares from Perform to Outperform, accompanied by a $90 price objective. This target indicates potential appreciation of 21% from the previous session’s close.
The rating enhancement came from analyst Jason Helfstein, who identified artificial intelligence-powered search enhancements, improved product discovery mechanisms, and elevated mobile application engagement as primary catalysts for the optimistic outlook.
Year-to-date, Etsy shares have appreciated 34%, substantially outpacing the S&P 500’s 11% gain during the same period.
Artificial Intelligence Search Capabilities Diminishing Google Reliance
Among the most significant findings from Oppenheimer’s analysis is the evolving pattern of how shoppers discover Etsy. Research encompassing 2,500 U.S. consumers revealed that 88% navigated directly to Etsy’s website or mobile app rather than utilizing Google Search as an intermediary.
This represents a substantial development. Reduced dependence on Google translates to greater autonomy over traffic sources and decreased vulnerability to search algorithm modifications that have previously impacted the marketplace negatively.
Helfstein observed that AI-enhanced search functionalities are demonstrating effectiveness. The consumer survey indicated 65% of respondents were either “very” or “somewhat” inclined to purchase products on Etsy. This represents an encouraging conversion indicator.
The analyst additionally highlighted that regression modeling of SimilarWeb traffic data indicates third-quarter non-app purchasers remained flat year-over-year, an improvement from the 3% contraction observed in Q2. This positive trajectory suggests Etsy’s upper gross merchandise sales guidance range is achievable.
Financial Projections Increased
Oppenheimer boosted its FY26 GMS forecast by 1%, positioning it at the upper boundary of Wall Street consensus. The investment firm currently projects 5% GMS growth for both fiscal 2027 and 2028.
These projections account for anticipated market share erosion within the online handmade category as emerging competitors establish presence. Oppenheimer anticipates the worldwide online handmade sector will expand 9% annually from 2025 through 2028, with Etsy surrendering 117 to 135 basis points of market share in 2027 and 2028.
An important consideration: Oppenheimer’s handmade market assessment encompasses approximately 73% of the survey’s product range. Etsy’s complete product portfolio extends well beyond exclusively handmade items, suggesting the market share loss apprehension may be excessive.
The $90 valuation target applies a 12x multiple to 2027 EBITDA projections. This represents a 10% discount relative to eBay’s valuation, despite Oppenheimer forecasting comparable growth trajectories for both enterprises.
Helfstein prudently assumed zero improvement in mobile app GMS on a two-year comparative basis within his models, notwithstanding what he characterizes as substantial product enhancements. Should mobile app performance strengthen, earnings estimates could experience upward revision.
Seeking Alpha’s quantitative rating for Etsy registers at 3.95 out of 5. Both Seeking Alpha contributors and Wall Street analysts maintain Buy recommendations on the shares.
