Shares of American Airlines (AAL) kicked off Monday’s session at $13.82 following confirmation that the carrier has scaled back its fourth quarter 2026 capacity expansion projections, based on Bank of America’s weekly airline capacity tracking data.

The Dallas-based carrier lowered its domestic capacity growth outlook for Q4 by 110 basis points, settling at 10.1%. The most significant adjustment affected November schedules, which saw a 300 basis point downward revision.
Additionally, American adjusted its Atlantic route capacity forecast downward by 140 basis points to 1.8%, while Pacific operations saw an even steeper 240 basis point cut, resulting in a negative 2.9% growth rate.
These revisions position American’s Q4 system-wide capacity growth at 6.5%, representing a decline from the previous week’s 7.6% projection. Despite the reduction, this figure remains higher than Delta Air Lines’ 3.2% and United Airlines‘ 5.7% for the comparable timeframe.
Industry-wide, domestic Q4 capacity growth declined by 30 basis points to 3.7%. United reduced its domestic expansion by 20 basis points to 9.6%. Alaska Air Group made a 20 basis point trim to 3.6%. Frontier implemented a more substantial 150 basis point cut, bringing its forecast to 11.3%.
Southwest Airlines moved against the broader trend, increasing capacity by 20 basis points for the September through December period, elevating its Q4 growth projection to 3.5%.
Transportation Security Administration checkpoint data through August 23 reflected a 3.7% year-over-year decline based on trailing seven-day averages, marking a deterioration from the previous week’s 3.0% decrease.
Major Institutional Investment Activity Continues
While capacity projections have softened, institutional capital continues flowing into AAL. Connor Clark & Lunn Investment Management established a new position valued at approximately $119.6 million during Q2, acquiring more than 6.6 million shares representing roughly 1% ownership of the company.
Additional smaller investment firms have also increased their exposure. Keating Financial Advisory Services, Pinnacle Holdings, and Clearstead Advisors each initiated or expanded their AAL holdings during recent reporting periods. Combined institutional investors and hedge funds currently control 52.44% of outstanding AAL shares.
Company insiders, however, have reduced their positions. SVP Angela Owens disposed of 40,077 shares on July 31 at an average price of $15.26 per share, while COO David Seymour sold 56,456 shares on June 25 at $18.00 each. Collectively, insiders have sold over 205,000 shares worth approximately $3.4 million during the most recent quarter.
Wall Street Maintains Moderate Outlook
Wall Street analysts maintain a consensus “Hold” rating on AAL with an average price objective of $19.03. Morgan Stanley leads the bullish camp, elevating its target to $24.00 alongside an “Overweight” recommendation. Deutsche Bank also assigns a “Buy” rating with an $18.00 price target. Barclays and Bank of America each maintain “Neutral” or “Equal Weight” ratings with $19.00 targets.
Technical indicators show AAL’s 50-day moving average at $15.85, while the 200-day moving average sits at $13.72. The company’s market capitalization currently stands at $9.15 billion.
During its latest earnings release on July 23, American posted earnings per share of $0.15 for the quarter, significantly surpassing the analyst consensus estimate of $0.03. Quarterly revenue reached $16.73 billion, representing a 16.3% year-over-year increase. The company’s full-year 2026 EPS guidance ranges from -$0.65 to $0.65.
