The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 2.8%, closing around 24,975. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 declined 1.5% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated 1.2%.

Financial Results That Triggered the Market Retreat
Alphabet’s second-quarter revenue reached $119.8 billion, surpassing Wall Street’s $116.9 billion projection. Google Cloud revenue soared to $24.8 billion, representing an impressive 82% year-over-year increase.
However, the figure that alarmed Wall Street was capital expenditure: $44.9 billion spent in just three months—exactly twice last year’s comparable period. This massive outlay exceeded the company’s operating cash flow of $39.1 billion, resulting in the company’s first-ever negative free cash flow on record.
The search giant increased its full-year capital expenditure forecast to $195–205 billion from the previous $180–190 billion range, while indicating that spending levels would climb even higher in 2027.
CEO Sundar Pichai defended the strategy, stating that AI investments are “redefining what’s possible across every part of our business.” Investors remained unconvinced, sending Alphabet shares down over 7% during Thursday’s session.
Tesla’s earnings revealed a comparable narrative. While vehicle deliveries of 480,126 units exceeded projections, automotive gross margin registered at 16.3%, significantly below analyst expectations of 18.04%.
Capital expenditures skyrocketed 142% to $5.8 billion as the electric vehicle maker intensifies its robotaxi and artificial intelligence initiatives. CEO Elon Musk assured analysts of confidence in investment returns. Tesla stock nevertheless plunged 13.5%.
Tech-Wide Capital Spending Concerns Emerge
The downturn rippled throughout the technology sector. Amazon declined nearly 5%, Meta fell approximately 4%, and Microsoft retreated more than 2%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had already shed over 20% from its late-June high before these quarterly reports arrived.
According to a Reuters examination, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle are collectively projected to spend more on capital expenditures than they produce in free cash flow by 2027. For every dollar of incremental operating cash flow these corporations anticipate generating from 2025 through 2027, they’re planning to allocate $1.57 toward capital spending.
This financial equation functioned effectively when these enterprises operated with software-level margins and minimal infrastructure requirements. Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming that business model.
Truist’s chief investment officer Keith Lerner characterized the selloff as resembling a sector rotation rather than wholesale market capitulation, noting that Industrials, Energy, and Healthcare sectors demonstrated relative resilience.
“The bull market still deserves the benefit of the doubt, but this reinforces our view from the past month that markets were entering a bumpier period,” Lerner said.
Market participants are now closely monitoring upcoming earnings from Meta and Microsoft, both scheduled for July 29, followed by Amazon on July 31.
