Shares of AeroVironment climbed 2.9% during after-hours trading on Tuesday, reaching $144.91, following the unmanned systems manufacturer’s announcement of quarterly results that significantly exceeded analyst projections.
The defense contractor announced fiscal first-quarter 2027 profits of $0.59 per share alongside revenue totaling $480.5 million. Wall Street analysts had projected earnings of only $0.22 per share on revenue of $452 million. During the comparable quarter one year earlier, AVAV delivered $0.32 per share in earnings on sales of $455 million.
The company’s adjusted EBITDA reached $53.4 million, representing a substantial 36.6% beat compared to the $39.1 million consensus forecast. Operating margin showed meaningful improvement at -2.3%, compared to -15.2% during the same period in the previous fiscal year.
The company reported negative free cash flow of -$35.95 million, representing a significant improvement compared to -$146.5 million during the year-ago quarter.
AeroVironment’s order backlog expanded to $1.5 billion, showing growth from $1.2 billion recorded at April’s conclusion. This metric serves as an important indicator of sustained customer demand for the company’s unmanned aircraft systems.
Company leadership maintained its full-year fiscal 2027 revenue guidance at the midpoint of $2.18 billion, accompanied by adjusted earnings per share guidance of $3.18. The EBITDA guidance of $315 million fell marginally short of the $318.2 million analyst consensus.
The stock had experienced significant downward pressure leading up to the earnings announcement. AVAV shares had declined approximately 40% year to date and more than 40% since the Iran War commenced, making this earnings report particularly critical for investor sentiment.
Factors Behind Stock Weakness
Defense sector equities have experienced broad-based selling pressure since hostilities erupted, driven by investor concerns that political divisions in Congress following midterm elections could result in defense spending impasses.
AeroVironment encountered company-specific challenges as well. During March, federal authorities terminated an approximately $1 billion contract for the company’s BADGER phased-array antenna technology, following a Space Force determination that commercially available alternatives would provide better cost efficiency.
The contract termination severely impacted share performance. The stock’s valuation multiple contracted from approximately 90 times forward earnings during early 2026 to roughly 39 times at present. Despite the compression, earnings projections still indicate annual growth of nearly 39% throughout the upcoming years.
Top-Line Growth Continues Strong Trajectory
Throughout the past five years, AeroVironment has achieved revenue expansion at a 37.4% compound annual growth rate. This growth trajectory has intensified in recent periods, with annualized revenue growth of 63% across the most recent two-year span.
The products segment, encompassing unmanned aircraft, precision missile systems, and satellite technologies, delivered average year-over-year growth of 65.4% during the past two years. The services division, which includes maintenance operations, training programs, and consulting engagements, posted even more dramatic growth averaging 195% throughout the identical timeframe.
Projecting forward, sell-side analysts anticipate revenue growth of 13.9% during the next twelve months. While this represents a deceleration from recent performance levels, it nonetheless signals expectations for persistent demand momentum.
AVAV has demonstrated a pattern of substantial price volatility following earnings releases. Shares surged approximately 19% following the Q4 fiscal 2026 announcement in June, while declining 6% after the Q3 report in March.
