Jane Street revealed close to $1 billion in [[LINK_START_0]]U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs[[LINK_END_0]] through its second-quarter regulatory filing, with BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust representing the dominant portion. These positions reflect holdings as of June 30, 2026.
The regulatory disclosure came after reports indicated Jane Street experienced approximately $15 billion in losses during July. Reuters attributed these losses to exposure involving AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness and additional market positions. The reported losses were not attributed to Bitcoin ETF holdings by Reuters.
Jane Street submitted the Form 13F documentation to the SEC on August 14. This regulatory document discloses qualifying U.S. securities positions held at the end of each quarter, meaning valuations may shift significantly during the weeks between quarter-end and public disclosure.
BlackRock IBIT Dominates Nearly $1 Billion Portfolio
Jane Street disclosed approximately $828 million in BlackRock’s IBIT at the conclusion of Q2. Combined with holdings in Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust, and additional funds, the firm’s total reported Bitcoin ETF exposure approached $1 billion.
BlackRock’s fund represented the overwhelming majority of this total. Jane Street maintained approximately 24.9 million IBIT shares on June 30, based on Form 13F reporting. These filings capture reportable securities positions rather than direct cryptocurrency ownership.
The second-quarter holdings demonstrated a dramatic shift from the previous quarter. Jane Street had disclosed roughly 5.9 million IBIT shares valued at approximately $225 million at the conclusion of Q1 after trimming its position by roughly 71%.
By the end of June, the firm had reconstructed its stake to approximately 24.9 million shares. This transformation illustrates the rapid fluctuation in its reported ETF holdings between reporting periods. Jane Street simultaneously broadened its participation in additional cryptocurrency exchange-traded products.
Form 13F Limitations Mask Complete Trading Picture
The identical filing revealed over 1.2 million shares of Bitwise’s spot XRP ETF, representing a substantial increase from 20,605 shares held three months prior. Jane Street additionally disclosed stakes in [[LINK_START_3]]XRP products[[LINK_END_3]] from Franklin Templeton, Grayscale, Canary Capital, and 21Shares.
Form 13F filings, however, capture specific long securities positions at quarter-end rather than complete trading activities. These disclosures typically omit short positions and may exclude futures contracts, swap agreements, and hedging strategies. Jane Street’s Bitcoin ETF holdings therefore demonstrate the magnitude of its reported positions while leaving its net directional Bitcoin exposure undisclosed.
