The cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has rolled out US stock trading capabilities for qualified customers throughout the European Economic Area, marking a significant expansion beyond its core digital asset offerings. This development provides EEA-based traders with access to thousands of American equities via Kraken’s existing mobile and web infrastructure.
This rollout integrates conventional shares into an ecosystem already featuring cryptocurrency and tokenized equity products. Kraken explained that qualified users can now oversee multiple asset categories from a single account, eliminating the need to transfer capital across different service providers.
The move represents a strategic expansion of Kraken’s offerings, merging regulated securities trading capabilities with its established crypto asset infrastructure.
US Equity Trading Launches Under MiFID II Framework
The equities service functions through Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited, Kraken’s Cyprus-registered subsidiary. This entity maintains authorization as a MiFID investment firm under the regulatory oversight of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission.
Qualified customers gain access to more than 7,000 US-listed securities through both Kraken Pro and the mobile application. According to the company, eligible users can execute commission-free trades within the boundaries of its regulated European structure.
Beyond traditional equities, the platform maintains support for over 600 cryptocurrency assets and more than 700 xStocks. These xStocks function as tokenized representations of US-listed companies, with Kraken maintaining full backing through corresponding underlying shares.
The platform architecture positions conventional stocks alongside tokenized alternatives within a unified trading interface. Users can select between traditional shares, blockchain-based tokenized products, or both formats based on their trading preferences.
Tokenized Equities Broaden Market Participation
Traditionally, European market participants have relied on separate platforms for accessing US stocks, cryptocurrencies, and tokenized products. Kraken’s integrated approach addresses this fragmentation by offering qualified EEA customers consolidated access through a single account structure.
Mark Greenberg, Chief Commercial Officer of Payward and Head of Payward Services, highlighted that the launch bridges the gap between conventional and tokenized formats. According to Greenberg, customers can obtain comparable underlying exposure while remaining on a single platform and avoiding capital transfers.
The xStocks product line enables users to gain equity market exposure through blockchain-native instruments. In contrast to traditional shares, these tokenized securities support transfer to self-custody wallets and integration with onchain applications, while preserving their backing through actual underlying stocks.
According to Kraken, xStocks have processed over $38 billion in cumulative transaction volume since their introduction. The company positions this combined offering to appeal both to crypto-native users seeking US equity exposure and conventional investors exploring tokenized market participation.
