The nonprofit organization behind Sam Altman’s World Network, known as World Foundation, has successfully closed a $52.5 million financing round by selling locked WLD tokens to select strategic investors.
The funding round was spearheaded by Pantera Capital, with additional backing from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto. All tokens distributed in this sale are locked for a mandatory 12-month period.
The capital raised will be allocated toward scaling World ID, the platform’s biometric authentication system designed to distinguish genuine human users from AI-powered bots and automated programs.
Understanding World ID’s Technology
World ID operates through a biometric scanning process using a specialized hardware device known as the Orb. Users scan their biometric information at the Orb, which then generates a digital credential verifying their human identity while maintaining privacy by not storing personal information.
According to World, the network has attracted more than 39 million registered users. Among these participants, over 18 million have completed verification through an Orb device. Since its inception, the platform has processed upwards of 475 million World ID authentication proofs.
The initiative was originally launched by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, working alongside Max Novendstern and Alex Blania, CEO of Tools for Humanity. The project has encountered regulatory challenges in multiple jurisdictions regarding its biometric data collection methodologies.
Pivoting Toward Enterprise Integration
World Foundation indicates it is transitioning from basic user acquisition to emphasizing practical, real-world applications. The newly raised capital will be deployed to integrate its identity verification solutions into enterprise software ecosystems and AI agent platforms.
“The necessity for Proof of Human is becoming increasingly urgent as AI development accelerates,” stated Cosmo Jiang, General Partner at Pantera Capital.
This funding event is not the network’s inaugural major capital raise. World Network previously secured $135 million in May 2025 through a private token offering to a16z and Bain Capital Crypto.
The WLD token currently sits at approximately $0.37 per token, representing a total market capitalization slightly above $1.3 billion.

This funding announcement arrives amid expanding investment activity in AI and cryptocurrency infrastructure. Paradigm successfully raised a $1.2 billion fund in July targeting investments across crypto, AI, and robotics sectors. Framework Ventures closed a $400 million fund in June with comparable investment objectives.
Additionally, Coinbase recently launched functionality enabling businesses to receive USDC payments from autonomous AI agents. The exchange reported that AI-generated traffic exceeded human traffic on its developer documentation pages for the first time last month.
World’s most recent capital raise positions the organization at the forefront of an expanding movement to authenticate human identity in digital spaces as AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated and difficult to distinguish from human-created material.
