Vista Energy, S.A.B. de C.V., VIST
According to a regulatory filing made public on Friday, Thiel Macro accumulated approximately 1.2 million American Depositary Shares in Vista Energy by the close of the second quarter, representing a market value of approximately $76 million.
This investment positioned Vista Energy as the fund’s runner-up holding by size, second only to Amazon, where Thiel Macro maintained approximately 495,000 shares worth about $118 million.
During the second quarter, Thiel Macro reconstructed its publicly disclosed U.S. stock portfolio to exceed $400 million in total value. This marked a significant shift after the fund had shown zero reportable holdings for the prior two consecutive quarters.
A clear strategic focus on energy emerged from the filing. Of the seven fresh positions established by the fund, six were concentrated in energy-related or utility sector companies.
These investments encompass American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy, X-Energy, and Vista Energy. Additionally, Thiel Macro reestablished a position in Vistra, expanding the stake to 372,755 shares with a valuation of $59.1 million by quarter’s end.
The Vaca Muerta Opportunity
Vista Energy’s operations are centered in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation, located in NeuquĆ©n provinceāa geological treasure trove ranked among the world’s most abundant resource basins.
The Vaca Muerta formation contains the planet’s second-most significant shale gas deposits and ranks fourth globally for shale oil reserves. Vista’s current production stands at approximately 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily, backed by more than $6.5 billion in capital investments throughout Argentina.
This operational scale establishes Vista as Argentina’s premier independent energy producer and positions it as a key investment vehicle for exposure to the nation’s resource wealth.
Peter Thiel’s Argentine Footprint
The investment timing coincides with Thiel’s deeper personal engagement with Argentina. Earlier in 2025, Thiel moved to Buenos Aires with his family and acquired residential property in the city.
Following his April arrival, Thiel participated in meetings with President Javier Milei at Casa Rosada, where they explored economic policy frameworks.
His engagement extended to discussions with key government figures including Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Deregulation Minister Federico Sturzenegger, and presidential adviser Santiago Caputo.
President Milei’s government has implemented comprehensive economic restructuring initiatives expressly aimed at drawing international investment into Argentina’s natural resource industries, encompassing oil extraction, lithium mining, and rare earth mineral development.
Thiel’s established relationships within Argentina’s political and economic leadership suggest the Vista Energy investment reflects both strategic positioning and personal conviction beyond conventional portfolio allocation.
As of Monday morning trading on the NYSE, VIST shares were up 5.77%.
