New York City-headquartered crypto trading platform Uphold has implemented significant workforce reductions, eliminating approximately 17% of its global staff. The restructuring affects roughly 85 individuals, encompassing both full-time team members and independent contractors operating across various international locations.
According to company statements, the workforce reduction aligns with a broader strategic realignment prioritizing its business-to-business operations. The enterprise division provides institutional clients—including banking institutions, fintech companies, and brokerage firms—with comprehensive crypto trading infrastructure and digital asset custody solutions.
Chief Executive Simon McLoughlin acknowledged the company had aggressively expanded its team during periods of robust market conditions. “We’re adjusting our structure following an extended period of exceptional expansion,” McLoughlin explained.
Weakening Crypto Markets Trigger Restructuring
Consumer-facing cryptocurrency trading volumes have experienced notable deterioration in recent months. Global cryptocurrency market valuation contracted to roughly $2.1 trillion as Q2 2026 concluded, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of market capitalization decline.
Multiple macroeconomic factors contributed to reduced trading activity, including elevated interest rate environments, international political tensions, and substantial capital flight from cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds. Bitcoin spot ETF products available to U.S. investors saw aggregate net redemptions totaling $6.9 billion across the May-June timeframe.
While July brought some relief with six consecutive trading sessions of positive inflows, the recovery remains relatively muted when measured against the preceding outflow period.
Institutional Services Division Demonstrates Momentum
Despite retail segment challenges, Uphold reports its institutional platform continues expanding. The B2B infrastructure enables traditional financial services providers to offer digital asset capabilities to their existing customer bases without building proprietary systems.
This positive trajectory in enterprise services justified the internal resource reallocation, according to company leadership. Uphold indicated additional enterprise-focused announcements will be forthcoming in subsequent months.
Established in 2015, Uphold operates a multi-asset platform enabling users to transact across cryptocurrencies, traditional currencies, equity securities, and commodities like precious metals within a unified account structure.
Management emphasized that no physical office locations have shuttered as part of the restructuring. International operations, including the United Kingdom facility, continue operating with full staffing complements.
McLoughlin stressed the company maintains long-term confidence in retail market potential. The consumer application roadmap through year-end 2026 includes integration of U.S. equity trading, tokenized security products, collateralized lending services, payment card offerings, prediction market access, and decentralized finance yield generation features with XRP compatibility.
Leadership characterized 2026 as a year focused on platform capability enhancement rather than retail market withdrawal.
