UniCredit, ranking among Europe’s premier banking institutions, is actively evaluating crypto custody and brokerage capabilities. According to Bloomberg’s reporting, the bank has begun preliminary vendor selection processes to identify technology partners capable of safeguarding digital assets and facilitating client transactions.
The bank has not finalized its strategic direction. Under consideration are custody solutions, brokerage operations, tokenized investment vehicles, digital fixed-income instruments, and stablecoin-related services.
UniCredit’s Current Digital Asset Initiatives
The Italian banking group has already established a foothold in cryptocurrency-related offerings. Last July, it introduced a five-year structured product for professional Italian investors, linking returns to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust with complete capital preservation and performance capped at 85%.
In December 2025, UniCredit facilitated Italy’s inaugural tokenized minibond issuance on public blockchain infrastructureāa 5 million euro debt instrument for E4 Computer Engineering registered on the Polygon network.
The bank participates in Qivalis, a European banking alliance comprising 37 institutions developing a MiCA-compliant euro-pegged stablecoin for Ethereum deployment during late 2026. The digital currency will maintain full reserve backing with euro deposits.
All contemplated crypto offerings must satisfy the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulatory framework. MiCA’s transitional period concluded July 1, mandating licensing for operators serving the 30-nation European Economic Area.
Competing financial institutions have pursued parallel strategies. Deutsche Bank established a digital asset custody partnership with Swiss provider Taurus. BBVA introduced Bitcoin trading capabilities for Swiss private banking clients. Israel’s Bank Leumi arranged with Galaxy for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana trading and custody services targeting 2027 launch.
On September 8, UniCredit acquired a minority position in VC Trade, a Frankfurt-based platform digitizing bond and loan transactions, which has processed over 90 billion euros across more than 600 deals.
Circle’s Arc Blockchain Launches as BRICS Digital Currency Plans Remain Preliminary
As traditional banks develop crypto infrastructure, Circle is finalizing preparations for its Arc Layer-1 blockchain launch on September 16. Arc employs USDC as its native transaction fee token and delivers sub-second finality.
The deployment proceeds as the US Senate schedules a procedural vote on the CLARITY Act for September 15. Circle has stated Arc’s launch will proceed independently of legislative developments.
Stablecoins currently command 308 billion dollars in aggregate supply, with settlement volume reaching 7.5 trillion dollars through March.
During this week’s BRICS Summit in New Delhi, participating countries examined potential central bank digital currency interconnection to diminish dependence on conventional banking infrastructure. Summit host India indicated opposition to a unified BRICS currency, favoring bilateral CBDC linkage frameworks.
The New Delhi Declaration, formally adopted September 12, acknowledges CBDC interoperability as a priority area. Nevertheless, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra confirmed the proposal remains in preliminary feasibility analysis.
Circle’s Arc blockchain becomes operational Monday. The BRICS CBDC initiative lacks defined implementation schedules.
