Uber’s autonomous strategy encompasses partnerships with Wayve, Baidu, and WeRide across multiple regions
Uber Technologies continues advancing its self-driving vehicle ambitions by bringing autonomous ride services to London in collaboration with Chinese robotaxi specialist Pony.ai. Testing of seventh-generation autonomous vehicles will commence within weeks, paving the way for commercial operations. Uber (UBER) stock climbed 0.39% to reach $68.72 during Tuesday’s midday session, rebounding from earlier declines.
London Testing Initiative Marks Strategic Autonomous Vehicle Push
The British capital represents the latest addition to Uber’s growing autonomous transportation footprint across global markets. Through this collaboration, Pony.ai contributes its advanced Gen-7 self-driving platform, while Uber facilitates rider connections via its established app infrastructure. The partnership has yet to reveal which entity will oversee operational management of the London fleet.
Uber currently collaborates with more than 30 companies developing autonomous vehicle technology throughout various regions. These alliances span both passenger transport and logistics delivery as the platform scales its driverless offerings. The company projects that autonomous ride options will reach up to 15 metropolitan areas around the world by December 2026.
This ambitious rollout encompasses domestic U.S. markets alongside European and Middle Eastern territories. By forging relationships with multiple autonomous technology providers, Uber diversifies its regional deployment capabilities. This strategy enables the platform to leverage specialized technologies without bearing the full burden of in-house development across every market.
European Robotaxi Deployment Follows Middle East Agreement
The Uber-Pony.ai alliance originated in May 2025, initially focused on bringing self-driving transportation to Middle Eastern markets. Both parties later broadened their collaboration to include European operations, committing to introduce 2,000 autonomous vehicles. Zagreb, Croatia’s capital city, served as the inaugural European launch site for this expanded partnership.
In August 2026, Uber and Pony.ai initiated autonomous ride services in Zagreb working with Croatian mobility provider Verne. Pony.ai delivers the autonomous driving platform, while Verne handles fleet administration and operational oversight. Uber’s role centers on integrating these driverless vehicles into its consumer-facing application.
The Croatian deployment utilizes Arcfox Alpha T5 vehicles produced through Pony.ai’s partnership with BAIC, a leading Chinese automotive manufacturer. Verne manages day-to-day fleet responsibilities while partners coordinate technical integration and customer experience. The upcoming London program will adopt comparable operational frameworks, though specific fleet management arrangements have not been announced.
Multiple Partnerships Accelerate Autonomous Strategy
Beyond Pony.ai, Uber has formed an alliance with UK-based autonomous technology firm Wayve to bring self-driving services to London. Wayve attracted $1.2 billion in February 2026 from investors including Microsoft, Nvidia, and Uber. Additional performance-based funding from Uber could push total investment to $1.5 billion contingent on robotaxi deployment milestones.
Uber has also signed agreements with Chinese technology leaders Baidu and WeRide to launch autonomous ride options in Dubai. Pony.ai presently operates self-driving taxi services across four Chinese municipalities while pursuing additional international opportunities. The company is actively exploring expansion into Qatar and other European and Middle Eastern locations.
