Uber, the global ride-hailing giant, is stepping up its efforts to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption among its drivers and riders.
The company recently announced a series of initiatives aimed at making EVs more accessible and appealing on its platform, including the launch of an AI-powered assistant and new options for riders to choose electric rides.
At the heart of Uber’s new strategy is an artificial intelligence assistant powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o technology.
Set to launch in early 2025 in the United States, this chatbot will be integrated into the Uber driver app to answer questions about transitioning to electric vehicles.
The AI assistant will provide personalized information on topics such as vehicle recommendations, driving range, charging options, and available incentives based on the driver’s location.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the importance of addressing drivers’ concerns about going electric.
“Going electric is a big decision, and drivers have lots of questions,”
he said. The AI assistant aims to provide comprehensive answers to “every EV question under the sun,” making it easier for drivers to make informed decisions about switching to electric vehicles.
To complement the AI assistant, Uber is also introducing an EV mentorship program. This initiative will connect experienced EV drivers with those considering the switch, allowing them to share firsthand experiences and insights. The company hopes this peer-to-peer support will further encourage EV adoption among its driver community.
On the rider side, Uber is expanding its Uber Green offering to include an all-electric option in over 40 cities worldwide. This new feature will allow passengers to specifically request an EV ride, separate from hybrid options.
The all-electric Uber Green will be available in major U.S. cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, as well as international locations including Paris and cities across Australia and New Zealand.
Uber is rolling out a preference setting for riders who want to prioritize EV rides. When enabled, this feature will match users with an electric vehicle if the wait time is only a few minutes longer than a standard UberX ride. This approach aims to make choosing an EV more convenient for riders without significantly impacting trip times.
To generate excitement around EVs, Uber is launching a series of “premium EV pop-ups” in select cities. These events will give riders the opportunity to experience innovative electric vehicles, such as the Lotus Eletre in London and the Rivian R1 in Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas.
Uber’s push towards electrification is part of its larger commitment to become a zero-emissions platform by 2040. The company reports that its drivers are adopting EVs at a rate five times faster than average motorists in North America and Europe.
In London, nearly 30% of all miles driven on Uber are now electric, showcasing significant progress in key markets.
To support this transition, Uber has pledged $800 million to help its driver partners switch to EVs by 2040. The company is also expanding its sustainability initiatives beyond ride-hailing. For example, Uber is awarding $50,000 to top merchants on its food delivery platform to fund their own sustainability projects and reach more customers.
These new initiatives build on Uber’s existing efforts to promote EV adoption. The company has been advocating for a shift to electric vehicles for several years, recognizing the important role it can play in reducing emissions in the transportation sector.
