Quarterly Profit Advances as Weather Events Take Bigger Toll
The insurance provider delivered diluted earnings of $9.04 per share for the third quarter, surpassing the $8.24 recorded in the same period last year. Net income climbed 2% from the $1.888 billion posted twelve months earlier, while core operating income registered a 4% increase to $1.947 billion. On a per-share basis, core earnings reached $9.18, compared with $8.14 in the year-ago quarter.
Improved reserve releases and stronger returns from the investment portfolio drove profitability higher, though severe weather events pressured results. The company booked $538 million in catastrophe-related claims during the quarter, a significant increase from the $402 million recorded a year earlier. In contrast, favorable adjustments to prior-year loss reserves jumped to $234 million from just $22 million.
Underwriting profit totaled $1.432 billion, marking a $54 million improvement over the previous year’s performance. The combined ratio—a key profitability metric—strengthened to 86.8% from 87.3%, signaling enhanced underwriting discipline. The underlying combined ratio, however, ticked up slightly to 84.1% from 83.9%, suggesting modest increases in baseline costs.
Mixed Premium Performance Across Business Lines
Net written premiums for the quarter reached $11.480 billion, essentially flat compared to $11.473 billion in the prior-year period. When adjusting for the divestiture of Canadian operations completed earlier this year, premium volume expanded 2%. The Business Insurance division contributed $5.868 billion in written premiums, reflecting 3% growth driven by retention and new customer acquisition.
The Bond and Specialty Insurance unit posted $1.209 billion in written premiums, representing a robust 12% increase. Heightened demand for surety products fueled the expansion, with new business production jumping 18% year-over-year. Meanwhile, the Personal Insurance segment experienced a 7% contraction to $4.403 billion in quarterly premiums.
Investment portfolio performance strengthened as both yields and asset balances grew. Pre-tax net investment income advanced 6% to $1.098 billion, translating to $908 million on an after-tax basis. The company recorded $30 million in after-tax realized investment losses during the quarter, a reversal from the $21 million in gains recognized in the comparable period.
Capital Returns Accelerate While Equity Position Contracts
Travelers distributed roughly $1.8 billion to shareholders through repurchases and dividend payments during the quarter. The company acquired four million shares for $1.508 billion, paying an average price of $376 per share. Remaining authorization for future buybacks stood at $2.415 billion as of September 30.
Shareholders’ equity decreased 12% from year-end 2025 levels to $28.995 billion, primarily due to widening unrealized losses in the fixed-income portfolio. Rising interest rates pressured bond valuations, pulling book value per share down 6% to $141.48. Adjusted book value per share, which excludes unrealized investment impacts, climbed 9% to $172.47 over the trailing twelve months.
For the nine-month period, net income surged 54% to $5.836 billion compared to the first three quarters of the previous year. The board of directors approved a quarterly cash dividend of $1.25 per share, payable on December 31 to stockholders of record as of December 10. The year-to-date combined ratio improved by 6.9 percentage points to 86.3%, benefiting from lower catastrophe activity compared to the prior year.
