Key Takeaways
- The $LAPTOP meme coin plummeted approximately 98% within moments of its debut

- A single anonymous trader transformed $250,000 into $1.18 million amid the turmoil
- Roughly 80% of participants experienced financial losses, with over 15,000 wallets showing negative returns
- Biden acknowledged the failure and promised to rectify the situation, though specific remediation plans remain unclear
The cryptocurrency token launched by Hunter Biden under the $LAPTOP ticker experienced a catastrophic failure on Wednesday, resulting in devastating losses for the vast majority of early participants within mere minutes of trading.
The token’s name referenced the infamous laptop scandal that had dogged Biden for several years. According to Biden, the symbol had evolved into a representation of “resilience, redemption and recovery” in his personal journey.
The initial trading activity was frenzied. The token’s valuation skyrocketed from approximately $2.39 to a peak of $316 on certain exchanges before plummeting below $4. Alternative data sources indicated the maximum price reached around $190. Regardless of the exact figure, the subsequent decline was catastrophic.

Biden attributed the disaster to the project’s market maker, who allegedly provided merely $5,000 in liquidity during the launch phase despite substantial market demand. This inadequate liquidity pool created conditions for extreme price fluctuations.
“There was a f–k up. The f–k-up occurred in the first 30 seconds of launching the coin,” Biden acknowledged in a video statement shared on X on Friday.
During its momentary peak, the token’s theoretical fully diluted valuation climbed to $144 billion, as reported by CoinDesk, despite lacking adequate liquidity to justify such a valuation.
Biden observed that the market capitalization temporarily exceeded BlackRock’s valuation, which stands above $175 billion. He described the price trajectory as resembling “Mount Everest.”
Massive Profit for Single Trader
An unidentified trader successfully converted approximately $250,000 into $1.18 million in a matter of minutes. This represents roughly $930,000 in gains excluding transaction fees, based on analysis from blockchain intelligence firm Datavault AI.
Conversely, another investor who purchased approximately $200,000 worth of tokens near the price peak was left holding assets valued at merely $2,000 following the collapse.
Analytics platform Bubblemaps determined that approximately 80% of participants sustained financial losses. Over 15,000 digital wallets recorded negative outcomes, with most individual losses remaining below $1,000.
A minority achieved positive returns. According to CryptoSlate, 88 wallets collectively generated $5.6 million in profits from the launch event.
Biden Accepts Accountability
Biden revealed that he had dedicated six months to developing the project and participated actively in every aspect of its development, including the token’s architecture and public presentation strategy.
He emphasized that neither he nor his collaborators liquidated any tokens during the event. Project team members were reportedly subject to a six-month lock-up period, preventing them from selling during the price surge.
“This is my f–king token,” Biden declared. “At the end of the day, it’s my responsibility, and there was a f–k up.”
He indicated that the development team was actively working to enhance liquidity and expand trading activity moving forward.
Biden stopped short of confirming whether affected investors would receive compensation, but pledged his ongoing commitment to the initiative.
“I am in this to the end 100%, and I promise you that we’re gonna make it right,” he stated.
