After years of anticipation and multiple postponements, Tesla has announced a firm unveiling date for its long-promised Roadster. CEO Elon Musk revealed on Saturday that the second-generation sports car will be shown to the public on October 1, marking nearly a decade since the original concept was introduced.
The electric vehicle maker shared a cryptic “Go for launch” message on X, which Musk clarified with his own post: “New Tesla Roadster Unveil 10.01.” The announcement generated significant buzz among enthusiasts and shareholders who have been tracking the project since its 2017 unveiling.
Shares of TSLA dropped 1.7% during Monday’s premarket session after the reveal date was disclosed.
SpaceX Facility Points to Rocket Technology Integration
Industry observers believe the reveal will take place at SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas testing grounds. The venue choice has fueled considerable discussion about potential demonstrations.
The highlight many are anticipating involves SpaceX-inspired cold-gas thruster technology. This propulsion method relies on compressed gas to generate rapid force bursts without traditional combustion engines. The technology might enable the vehicle to briefly levitate or hover during an autonomous demonstration.
An exclusive Roadster variant could feature integrated thrusters aimed at enhancing launch speed, stopping power, and handling dynamics. Tesla hasn’t disclosed final cost figures, manufacturing schedules, or customer delivery windows.
Earlier performance projections for the supercar were remarkable: zero to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, maximum velocity exceeding 250 mph, and approximately 620 miles of driving range powered by a 200 kWh battery system.
Additional Anticipated Features
In addition to thruster technology, Tesla may showcase a version closer to mass production readiness. Attendees can expect detailed information about performance metrics like acceleration times, maximum speed, driving range, and circuit track capabilities.
According to The Information’s August reporting, Tesla completely redesigned the Roadster as a bespoke carbon-fiber hypercar, abandoning earlier plans to utilize Model S Plaid components.
This unveiling arrives amid several significant milestones for the automaker. A Semi truck presentation is scheduled for September 24, with European deliveries anticipated in 2027. Additionally, Tesla has begun offering limited autonomous Cybercab experiences in Austin.
The first-generation Roadster was manufactured between 2008 and 2012, with approximately 2,450 units produced. Built using a modified Lotus Elise platform, it demonstrated that electric vehicles could achieve practical range and impressive performance metrics.
The upcoming second-generation model has experienced at least eight separate delays since its prototype introduction in 2017.
Analysts currently assign TSLA a Moderate Buy rating, reflecting 11 Buy recommendations, 12 Hold positions, and three Sell ratings from the last three months. The consensus price target stands at $377.08, suggesting approximately 3% potential upside from present trading levels.
