Payment processing behemoth Stripe, currently commanding a $159 billion valuation, has entered advanced negotiations to purchase OpenRouter, a New York-headquartered startup offering developers streamlined access to various artificial intelligence models. Industry sources suggest the transaction could value the AI platform at approximately $10 billion.
Established in 2023, OpenRouter operates a comprehensive marketplace featuring hundreds of large language models. The platform enables clients to evaluate and transition seamlessly between offerings from major providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and complimentary open-weight options. OpenRouter’s revenue model involves charging a markup percentage above each model’s base pricing — an approach that mirrors traditional payment processing economics.
PitchBook data indicates OpenRouter secured a $1.3 billion valuation during its May 2026 financing round. The company’s investor roster includes Menlo Ventures alongside CapitalG, the investment division of Google’s parent organization Alphabet.
While an announcement could materialize imminently, negotiations remain fluid and could potentially dissolve. Multiple prominent technology firms had previously evaluated potential bids for OpenRouter before Stripe positioned itself as the frontrunner.
Expanding Beyond Traditional Payment Processing
Stripe has been systematically diversifying its operations beyond conventional payment services. The company recently announced initiatives focused on developing infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence applications and cryptocurrency-based transactions.
“As tokens become increasingly fungible with money, streaming payments in real time is an important part of Stripe’s economic infrastructure for AI,” Stripe said in a statement earlier this year.
The two organizations already maintain a commercial partnership, with OpenRouter utilizing Stripe’s payment infrastructure to handle transactions from its customer base.
OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah has drawn parallels between his company’s operational framework and Stripe’s established model. Both enterprises function as intermediaries facilitating transactions — Stripe for monetary exchanges, OpenRouter for artificial intelligence model consumption.
The Growing Demand for AI Model Flexibility
Organizations are progressively adopting multi-model AI strategies to optimize expenditures and mitigate vendor lock-in risks. This trend has elevated the strategic importance of AI routing platforms.
The competitive landscape is rapidly evolving. Cursor unveiled its routing solution just days ago. Financial management platform Ramp, valued at $44 billion, is developing comparable functionality. Databricks has also introduced similar routing capabilities within its ecosystem.
Concurrently, Stripe is exploring a separate strategic acquisition of PayPal in partnership with private equity firm Advent International. The partnership submitted an unsolicited proposal valuing PayPal at approximately $53 billion, though PayPal’s leadership deemed the offer insufficient. Stripe and Advent continue deliberating their approach.
Should the OpenRouter transaction reach completion, it would represent among the most significant mergers and acquisitions in the AI infrastructure sector throughout the current year.
