If you’re a comedy fan, then you know Steve Harvey. This African-American actor, comedian, and TV show presenter has a huge following, with a net worth of $200 million. He’s well-known as the host of ‘The Steve Harvey Show,’ and the ‘Family Feud’  franchise.

Harvey is quoted as saying the following when describing his comedy career, “You have to jump and take a leap of faith in order to soar.” However, the actor admits the road to success wasn’t easy. His journey to superstardom had plenty of bumps along the way, with Harvey ending up homeless at one point.

Harvey got his big break in show business in 1990. He came in first place at a national comedy competition, landing him a spot on Showtime at the Apollo. Just like that, Steve’s career turned on a dime, and he found himself rising to fame as one of America’s legendary comics and entertainment.

Born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia, Steve is the son of Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera. His father was a coal miner, and his mother a housewife. Steve was born ‘Broderick’ Harvey, named after the actor Broderick Crawford from the TV show ‘Highway Patrol.’ However, he changed his name to Steve to avoid ridicule at school.

Steve had a problem with stuttering at an early age, but he overcame the condition. The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, moving into a home on East 112th Street. The city renamed the street to ‘Steve Harvey Way’ in 2015.

Harvey graduated from Glenville High School in 1974 attending West Virginia University and Kent State University. He’s a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity but he never graduated college. In an interview later in his life, Harvey admitted his biggest regret is not completing his degree.

After leaving school, Steve held several jobs. He was a boxing trainer, autoworker, insurance salesman, carpet cleaner, and a mailman. However, his first venture in comedy gave his life the direction he needed, and Steve threw his mind into dominating the art form.

On October 8, 1985 Steve stepped on stage for the first time at an open mic event at ‘Hilarities Comedy Club’ in Ohio. Steve spent the rest of the 1980s living out of his car as he drove around the country performing at comedy clubs.

Steve experienced his first commercial success as a comedian in the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search in 1990. He won the show and landed a spot on ‘It’s Showtime at the Apollo,’ as a host.

Steve continued to perform stand-up, and he was part of the ‘Kings of Comedy’ tour with D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and the late Bernie Mac in 1997. The tour became one of the highest grossing of all time in the comedy industry, generating $37 million in ticket sales between 1997 to 1998.

His success as a comic and recognition in the industry landed him opportunities in show business. In 1994, Steve got a role on the ABC show ‘Me and the Boys.’ In 1996, Steve got his own show, ‘The Steve Harvey Show’ on WB network, running until 2002.

Steve Harvey performed his final standup comedy show on August 2, 2012. The show was at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, marking the end of Harvey’s 27 year career as a standup. While Steve got his start as a standup, he diversified his show business career into acting and hosting.

Harvey started hosting on the game show ‘Family Feud’ in 2010. He’s the longest-serving host of the show, and host of the spin-off ‘Celebrity Family Feud.’ Harvey is a meme on the internet due to his many hilarious reactions to questions on the show.

Steve Harvey – Business Ventures

Harvey decided to include all of his business ventures under one umbrella in 2017. He called his holding company ‘Steve Harvey Global.’ Included in the vehicle is ‘East One Twelve,’ his in-house production company used for producing content for films and TV.

The company also owns the rights for the international version of Family Feud. Steve used SHG to launch the Sand and Soul Festival in 2017, with the annual event featuring comedy, live music, and a Q&A session with Steve and his wife Marjorie.

He also has ‘Harvey Events’ included in SHG, with the company being under the leadership of his daughter, Morgan Hawthorne and his son-in-law, Kareem Hawthorne. The company has produced high-quality events like the ‘FroRibbean Fest’ in 2018.

In 2017, Harvey hosted a New Year’s Eve special direct from Times Square for the Fox network. He produced the show in partnership with IMG. A few days before the broadcast, Steve was ordained in NYC, allowing him to officiate an on-air wedding between Maria Menounos Keven Undergaro during his show. The special ended up being the most popular special ever viewed on the Fox network.

Steve Harvey – Controversy

Steve Harvey experienced some controversy during his career. Harvey called Tavis Smiley and Cornel West “Uncle Toms” in August 2011 after they criticized President Barack Obama. He apologized for the comment at a later date, but kept his view of Smiley and West.

Harvey also received criticism for his meeting with Donald Trump in 2017, after Trump won the Presidential race in late 2016. Steve defended his decision to attend the meeting, claiming his actions who help to create positive change in the social structure.

Steve’s biggest blunder came in early January 2017. The host joked about his feelings toward Asian men, claiming that no white or black person would want to date them. He’s quoted as saying the following:

“Excuse me, do you like Asian men?” he said, “No, thank you.” He added, “I don’t even like Chinese food.”

The Asian-American community to offense to these remarks, with NYC politicians and author Eddie Huang jumping on the bandwagon to chastise the comedian for his remarks. Huang remarked that Harvey was quick to call out inequality in the African-American community, but didn’t feel it was necessary to do the same for Asian-Americans.

Harvey apologized for his transgression on Twitter, and during his talk show. The host tweeted the following.

“I ain’t been laughing that much over the past few days. They’re kinda beating me up on the internet right now for no reason. But, you know, that’s life, ain’t it?”

“I offer my humblest apology for offending anyone, particularly those in the Asian community. … It was not my intention, and the humor was not meant with any malice or disrespect whatsoever.”

Steve Harvey is married to his third wife, Marjorie Bridges. The couple tied the knot in 2007, and have remained married for the last 15 years. Steve has a total of seven children, three from the first marriage, one from the second, and three step children with his current wife.
