Born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia, Steve is the son of Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera. His father was a coal miner, and his mother a housewife. Steve was born ‘Broderick’ Harvey, named after the actor Broderick Crawford from the TV show ‘Highway Patrol.’ However, he changed his name to Steve to avoid ridicule at school.
Steve had a problem with stuttering at an early age, but he overcame the condition. The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, moving into a home on East 112th Street. The city renamed the street to ‘Steve Harvey Way’ in 2015.
Harvey graduated from Glenville High School in 1974 attending West Virginia University and Kent State University. He’s a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity but he never graduated college. In an interview later in his life, Harvey admitted his biggest regret is not completing his degree.
After leaving school, Steve held several jobs. He was a boxing trainer, autoworker, insurance salesman, carpet cleaner, and a mailman. However, his first venture in comedy gave his life the direction he needed, and Steve threw his mind into dominating the art form.

Steve experienced his first commercial success as a comedian in the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search in 1990. He won the show and landed a spot on ‘It’s Showtime at the Apollo,’ as a host.
Steve continued to perform stand-up, and he was part of the ‘Kings of Comedy’ tour with D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and the late Bernie Mac in 1997. The tour became one of the highest grossing of all time in the comedy industry, generating $37 million in ticket sales between 1997 to 1998.

Harvey also received criticism for his meeting with Donald Trump in 2017, after Trump won the Presidential race in late 2016. Steve defended his decision to attend the meeting, claiming his actions who help to create positive change in the social structure.
Steve’s biggest blunder came in early January 2017. The host joked about his feelings toward Asian men, claiming that no white or black person would want to date them. He’s quoted as saying the following:
