TLDR
- A seven-day STRK governance ballot began on October 15, with the voting window closing on October 22.
- The advisory vote asks token holders whether Starknet should explore independence as a standalone layer-1 blockchain.
- StarkWare aims for quantum resistance by 2027, while Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap extends to December 2029.
- Initial results showed 99.9% of voting power favoring additional research, though the ballot remains active.
- No migration timeline has been proposed by StarkWare, and STRK would continue as the network’s native asset regardless of the outcome.
Starknet initiated a week-long community ballot to determine whether the network should explore independence from Ethereum as a standalone layer-1 blockchain. The advisory poll opened October 15 and concludes October 22.
STRK stakers and delegators may vote to support additional research, oppose the study, or signal a need for further details. This ballot does not authorize any network transition or establish implementation deadlines.
Three options presented in Starknet governance ballot
The governance proposal provides Yes, No, and Neutral selections. A Yes outcome would initiate research and subsequent governance votes, rather than triggering an immediate platform change.
A No result would maintain quantum security development within Starknet’s existing Ethereum layer-2 framework. A Neutral vote would permit ongoing discussion while community members gather additional information.
The Starknet Foundation confirms STRK will continue as the network’s native asset under any outcome. Bridges linking Ethereum and Starknet would remain operational. Developers have yet to release any migration schedule.
Quantum computing threats fuel layer-1 discussion
StarkWare indicates that Starknet’s proof system already employs cryptography built to resist quantum computing attacks. However, its bridge infrastructure and data posted to Ethereum remain tied to Ethereum’s security upgrade timeline.
In an October 8 X post, Starknet revealed it was evaluating layer-1 status while pursuing quantum resistance by 2027. StarkWare simultaneously launched Shadow Accounts for private DeFi activity earlier this week.
Ethereum maintains a post-quantum roadmap, aiming for comprehensive protection across fundamental layers by December 2029. This represents a goal rather than a firm commitment. Existing quantum computers lack the capability to compromise Ethereum’s cryptographic systems.
StarkWare described an independent blockchain as its most direct route in an October 10 X post. Its June strategy document identified Ethereum bridges and data availability as external dependencies requiring attention.
STRK market response amid ongoing discussion
The governance vote follows a significant STRK price rally on October 11. The token surged over 50% within 24 hours before pulling back. Market fluctuations do not forecast voting patterns among token holders.
As of 14:40 UTC on October 15, 293 votes representing 179.8 million STRK in voting power showed 99.9% backing research efforts. Complete results will emerge after the poll closes, without authorizing any network transition.
Other industry participants are evaluating quantum threats. Coinbase released a Bitcoin post-quantum security plan, encouraging developers to prepare ahead of powerful quantum computers becoming available. Those recommendations address Bitcoin and differ from Starknet’s governance process.
Transitioning to layer-1 status would require Starknet to handle security and settlement operations independently of Ethereum. The technical design, implementation costs, and migration procedures remain subjects for future governance decisions. No definitive independent network blueprint or schedule has been disclosed.
