SpaceX has announced Thursday, July 23 as the new target date for Starship’s 13th test mission. The rescheduling follows a dramatic abort that occurred mere seconds before liftoff on July 16.
The launch was scrubbed due to multiple engines failing to start properly. Engine reliability has been a recurring challenge for Starship — the previous test flight, Flight 12, also encountered propulsion anomalies that prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to open an investigation.
Hardware and Software Improvements Implemented
In response to the aborted attempt, SpaceX announced it has implemented modifications to both the hardware and software components of the propulsion architecture. According to the company, these enhancements specifically address the engine startup failures that forced the July 16 countdown stoppage.
Company CEO Elon Musk first indicated on X that the launch would occur Friday before issuing a correction stating “I mean Thursday.” The Thursday timeframe was subsequently confirmed in SpaceX’s official statement.
The market reaction to the July 16 abort was severe, with SpaceX losing approximately $100 billion in valuation. The company’s total market capitalization has declined by roughly $1 trillion from its $2.64 trillion peak achieved shortly after going public in June.
Mission Objectives and Payload
Starship represents SpaceX’s most powerful launch vehicle to date. For this thirteenth mission, the rocket will transport 20 Starlink V3 satellites while demonstrating satellite deployment systems and testing Starlink’s laser-based communication technology.
The satellites aboard this flight are not intended to achieve orbit. Instead, they will follow a suborbital trajectory and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere following deployment.
Key success criteria for the mission include successful liftoff, ascent phase completion, stage separation, boostback maneuver, and controlled landing burn at a designated offshore site.
The Starship test program launched in 2023 and has completed 12 flights to date. The development initiative carries an estimated $15 billion price tag and has demonstrated a pattern of significant engineering progress punctuated by notable failures.
SpaceX’s IPO documentation indicates the company intends to begin deploying Starlink satellites to orbit using Starship before year’s end. Routine operational flights are planned to commence once this capability is validated.
