South Korean semiconductor manufacturer SK Hynix is evaluating the establishment of a memory chip production facility in Japan through a collaborative venture, aiming to boost manufacturing capacity amid surging artificial intelligence-related demand.
During bilateral business discussions between South Korean and Japanese commerce organizations in Sendai, SK Group’s Chairman Chey Tae-won acknowledged ongoing evaluations. The company has yet to finalize decisions regarding location selection, capital investment amounts, or potential collaboration partners.
“We are looking all over Japan,” Chey said. “Anywhere with good power and good water.”
This Japanese exploration represents one component of SK Hynix’s comprehensive international manufacturing expansion strategy. The company recently launched construction on a semiconductor packaging plant in West Lafayette, Indiana, while simultaneously planning a massive 54 trillion won ($39 billion) facility upgrade across South Korean operations.
Japanese Region Pursues Semiconductor Investment
Miyagi Prefecture has launched an active campaign to secure the manufacturing facility, presenting a 300,000-square-meter industrial site complete with enhanced water systems and electrical infrastructure designed specifically for chip production requirements.
Tokyo has demonstrated considerable commitment to attracting global semiconductor manufacturers through substantial financial incentives. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has already secured such support, positioning SK Hynix as a potential future recipient.
Competitor Micron Technology currently maintains production operations in Hiroshima. Japan’s semiconductor ecosystem includes numerous SK Hynix supply chain partners such as Tokyo Electron, alongside major clients including Sony and Nintendo.
AI Infrastructure Fuels Memory Chip Growth
SK Hynix maintains an indirect ownership position in Tokyo-based flash memory manufacturer Kioxia Holdings. Chief Executive Officer Kwak Noh-jung recently stated the company is “carefully looking at how we can co-develop the NAND flash market with our customers and suppliers.”
Demand for high-bandwidth memory and NAND flash technology has accelerated dramatically as technology giants including Meta and Amazon expand data center infrastructure designed to support artificial intelligence computing requirements.
As a critical supplier for Nvidia’s artificial intelligence processors, SK Hynix has emerged as an essential participant in the ongoing AI infrastructure expansion.
Company leadership anticipates worldwide memory chip supply constraints will extend through the end of this decade, establishing capacity expansion as a strategic imperative for upcoming years.
Chey also used the Sendai meetings to make a broader point about regional economic cooperation. “Now is the time for Korea and Japan to form an economic bloc,” he said at an event focused on the two countries’ shrinking workforces.
The company has not announced a specific timeframe for reaching a decision on the Japanese manufacturing venture.
