South Korean technology powerhouse Samsung is engaged in negotiations to pour approximately €1 billion into Mistral, a French artificial intelligence startup, according to a Wednesday report from the Financial Times. The investment would be part of a fresh financing round positioning the company’s worth at around €20 billion ($22.81 billion).
Reuters noted it was unable to independently confirm the details of the report at publication time.
If completed, this valuation would mark a dramatic increase from the €11.7 billion figure Mistral commanded when it secured €1.7 billion in its Series C financing round in September 2025 — essentially doubling its worth in less than twelve months.
Shares of Samsung Electronics (005930) climbed 0.58% following the news.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., SMSD.L
Established in 2023, Mistral was co-founded by AI experts who previously worked at Google DeepMind and Meta. Operating from Paris, the company specializes in developing sophisticated large language models and artificial intelligence platforms. It has emerged as Europe’s most prominent domestically-grown competitor to American AI powerhouses including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Microsoft Expands Mistral Partnership
Samsung isn’t alone among major technology companies strengthening relationships with Mistral. Microsoft has independently entered into a collaborative agreement with the French startup, pledging billions of dollars toward developing and enhancing computing infrastructure throughout Europe.
Through its Azure cloud services platform, Microsoft makes Mistral’s AI models available to enterprises, providing the startup with entry to one of the planet’s most extensive corporate client networks.
Additionally, Mistral secured $830 million in debt financing during March to support data center construction projects in France and Sweden.
European AI Independence Accelerates
These discussions emerge as European nations and corporations intensify efforts to establish AI capabilities that reduce reliance on American technological solutions.
Mistral has strategically embraced this narrative, marketing itself as a sovereign European artificial intelligence alternative for commercial enterprises and governmental organizations.
If finalized, Samsung’s reported €1 billion commitment would represent among its most substantial investments in European artificial intelligence initiatives.
The Financial Times published its report on July 22, 2026. No official confirmation had been released by either Samsung or Mistral as of this writing.
Microsoft’s engagement with Mistral continues expanding, with the technology giant having already pledged significant resources toward comprehensive European AI infrastructure development.
