Shares of Samsung Electronics rallied more than 6% Wednesday following a Yonhap News Agency report indicating the tech giant is preparing a share repurchase initiative valued at roughly 90 trillion won ($58.61 billion).
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., SMSD.L
During trading, the stock reached 336,500 won, staging a significant comeback from Tuesday’s devastating session where it tumbled more than 12% amid a widespread KOSPI market crash. The selloff was severe enough to trigger trading circuit breakers for the fourth occasion in 2026.
The recovery catapulted Samsung back to South Korea’s top position by common-share market capitalization, surpassing SK Hynix’s more moderate 1.6% daily increase.
According to Yonhap’s report, the information came from unnamed industry insiders. Samsung Electronics has not issued a response to inquiries regarding the buyback strategy or its implementation timeline.
Tuesday’s decline was partially attributed to substantial profit-taking activity. Samsung’s shares had experienced an astronomical rally of nearly 450% during the preceding twelve months. Additionally, selling pressure from highly leveraged single-stock ETFs focused on Samsung and SK Hynix intensified the downturn. South Korea’s financial oversight authority publicly acknowledged regret over greenlighting 16 such leveraged ETFs, which debuted in late May.
The KOSPI index finished Tuesday’s session down 9.99% at 8,203.84 points.
Understanding the Buyback Structure
The share repurchase program is directly linked to a recently negotiated compensation package between Samsung leadership and its labor union. According to the terms, Samsung commits to allocating approximately 10.5% of its yearly operating profit toward special bonuses for semiconductor division personnel, distributed as company stock.
This arrangement generated internal discussions about fairness, given that the bonus framework would predominantly favor semiconductor division workers.
Workers receiving treasury shares through the bonus program will have the option to liquidate one-third without delay. An additional third becomes available after a one-year waiting period, with the remaining portion unlocking after an additional year.
Samsung may also require additional stock repurchases to fund a separate incentive program known as the Performance Stock Unit initiative, which launched last October. This program links employee compensation to sustained stock performance metrics.
Artificial Intelligence Surge Powers Profit Projections
Both Samsung and SK Hynix are anticipated to deliver unprecedented profit results this year and throughout 2026, propelled by escalating demand for memory semiconductors utilized in AI computing infrastructure. Tech corporations accelerating their data center expansion efforts have generated a supply constraint for the high-bandwidth memory components essential for AI model training and deployment, elevating market prices.
This industry environment has served as a primary catalyst behind Samsung’s remarkable 450% stock appreciation over the past year, and also clarifies the magnitude of pressure from shareholders and employees for the company to return a portion of these gains.
Samsung has yet to officially verify the buyback program or release specifics regarding execution timing.
