U.S. equity futures posted modest gains on Friday as investors sought to recover from Thursday’s pronounced market decline. A retreat in Treasury yields provided some relief to market participants, although concerns persisted with Brent crude oil hovering near $93 per barrel.
Ross Stores emerged as a clear winner in early trading, surging between 8.5% and 9%. The discount retailer delivered quarterly sales of $6.3 billion, representing a 14% increase from the same period last year. Comparable store sales advanced 10%, while earnings per share reached $2.66.
The quarterly performance benefited from a $253 million tariff reimbursement through the IEEPA program, which boosted profitability. Management increased its full-year earnings per share projection to a range of $8.61 to $8.77, compared to the prior forecast of $7.50 to $7.74. The retailer also announced intentions to launch 115 new locations in 2026, exceeding earlier expansion targets.
Cryptocurrency Equities Gain on Legislative Tailwinds
Coinbase increased 5.6%, Robinhood climbed 5.3%, and Strategy jumped 10% in premarket activity. These cryptocurrency-exposed stocks have strengthened throughout the week following President Donald Trump’s public appeal for Congress to advance the Clarity Act, proposed legislation aimed at establishing clearer cryptocurrency regulations.
Strategy’s impressive performance was additionally fueled by Bitcoin’s robust rally. The leading cryptocurrency appreciated nearly 22% across five consecutive trading sessions, reaching approximately $78,500. This surge transformed Strategy’s Bitcoin investment from substantial losses into an estimated $1.4 billion unrealized profit.
Just months ago in July, when Bitcoin traded at $58,000, Strategy faced unrealized losses exceeding $13 billion. Friday’s valuation represents a dramatic reversal from that trough.
Moderna Finds Stability Following Turbulent Trading
Moderna shares climbed 4% on Friday following Thursday’s 24% selloff. The previous day’s decline occurred as traders took profits following the stock’s earlier explosive gains, which were triggered by encouraging clinical trial outcomes for a personalized cancer vaccine co-developed with Merck.
OSI Systems plummeted 14% after announcing fourth-quarter revenue of $484.1 million, representing a 4.1% year-over-year decrease and falling approximately $45.6 million short of analyst projections. The company’s fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of $1.875 to $1.93 billion also missed the consensus estimate of $1.94 billion.
Aveanna Healthcare Holdings declined 9% after existing stakeholders executed a 15 million share secondary offering priced at $11.75 per share. The healthcare company is not issuing additional equity and will not receive any capital from the transaction.
Flowers Foods dropped 5% after second-quarter revenue totaled $1.19 billion, falling $40 million below expectations. Management also revised its full-year sales and profit guidance downward, below analyst forecasts.
As Friday’s trading session approached, markets displayed signs of a cautious rebound, with cryptocurrency-related equities and Ross Stores’ exceptional quarterly performance providing the most notable positive momentum.
