Shares of Rigetti Computing climbed nearly 6% in premarket hours Tuesday, reaching $16.06, after the quantum computing firm announced a $100 million funding arrangement with the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The financial commitment originates from the CHIPS Research and Development Office, established under the CHIPS and Science Act. Resources will be allocated across three distinct research and development initiatives centered on superconducting quantum technology.
The funded projects include: miniaturizing readout electronics into compact form factors, enhancing cryogenic system capacity through innovative cryostat designs, and building manufacturing infrastructure for high-connectivity quantum chip architectures.
Rigetti CEO Subodh Kulkarni stated the capital infusion will accelerate the company’s path to utility-scale quantum systems. “Addressing critical scaling obstacles positions us to revolutionize this sector,” Kulkarni remarked.
Under terms of the agreement, the U.S. Department of Commerce will obtain a minority equity position without control rights in Rigetti.
The initiative aims to reduce both development timelines and expenses associated with constructing large-scale quantum computing infrastructure. Rigetti expects this advancement will facilitate wider commercial adoption while bolstering America’s quantum technology capabilities.
Charts Show Continued Pressure
While shares gained ground Tuesday, RGTI’s technical indicators continue signaling weakness. Trading at $16.03, the equity remains 4.6% beneath its 20-day simple moving average and 2.4% under its 50-day SMA.
Further distance appears against longer timeframes, with shares positioned 12.4% below the 100-day SMA and 16.9% under the 200-day moving average. The MACD indicator continues trading beneath its signal line, suggesting subdued upward momentum.
Market participants are monitoring $16.50 as immediate overhead resistance while identifying $15.50 as a key support threshold.
Street Maintains Optimistic Stance
Despite technical headwinds, analyst sentiment toward RGTI remains constructive. Six covering analysts project an average share price of $32.60, representing approximately 100% upside from current levels.
Rosenblatt Securities has reaffirmed its Buy recommendation alongside a $40 price objective on two occasions this year, with the latest reiteration occurring August 7. Similarly, Wedbush Securities maintained its Outperform rating with a $40 target on August 3.
RGTI represents a significant holding across multiple quantum-focused exchange-traded funds, including a 7.52% allocation in the Corgi Quantum Computing 2x Daily ETF (XQTM) and 5.33% in the WisdomTree Quantum Computing Fund (WQTM).
These substantial weightings create potential for ETF capital flows to materially impact share price performance.
The funded research programs will be conducted by Rigetti & Co, LLC, the company’s wholly owned operating subsidiary. Management emphasizes the work directly supports strategic objectives around achieving commercial-grade quantum computing solutions.
Kulkarni noted that decreasing construction costs and timelines for scaled quantum infrastructure will democratize access for scientific researchers nationwide.
This CHIPS Act allocation represents among the most substantial federal investments directed toward a dedicated quantum computing enterprise.
