Ethereum has delivered impressive gains exceeding 9% throughout September 2026, defying the month’s historical pattern of sluggish cryptocurrency performance. Major market participants have expanded their positions significantly, while token quantities on centralized platforms have decreased and American spot investment vehicles have received substantial capital.
Major Investor Transaction Volume Surges
Market analyst Ali Martinez documented that high-value transactions exceeding $1 million expanded from 1,202 to 7,113 over a seven-day period. This surge represents approximately a 500% expansion. Concurrently, major holders acquired more than 320,000 ETH, representing roughly $864 million in value.
Additional whale purchasing patterns revealed another significant acquisition during the recent downward movement. Market observer Ted Pillows documented that a single investor purchased $119.67 million in ETH on September 23. Ethereum dropped beneath $2,700 that session after encountering rejection at $2,800, touching an intraday minimum of $2,648.
Martinez highlighted resistance zones spanning $2,722 to $2,822. Historical data indicates investors previously exchanged more than 13.3 million ETH within this price corridor, according to his technical assessment.
He noted Ethereum may experience multiple rejection attempts before successfully penetrating the zone. A sustained breakthrough above this region would direct attention toward subsequent resistance barriers positioned near $2,970 and $3,366.
Exchange Holdings Drop to Historic Minimum
Monitored centralized platforms currently maintain 3.49% of total Ethereum circulation, representing the smallest recorded proportion. Regarding related staking trends, Lookonchain documented that a single wallet converted 1,308 BTC into 40,670 ETH across six days. The wallet subsequently staked these tokens. Lookonchain further documented that another significant investor acquired 4,500 ETH, elevating its total holdings to approximately 37,000 ETH.
Expanding staking participation and decentralized financial platform usage has driven the reduction in exchange reserves. Roughly 35% of ETH remains committed to staking mechanisms, while decentralized finance applications control approximately $53 billion in value. Extended holding strategies and corporate treasury allocations also maintain tokens away from centralized venues. An additional 1.16% of circulating supply has departed exchanges since June 1.
US-based spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds captured close to $690 million throughout the week concluding September 25. Monday recorded the strongest performance with nearly $270 million. Tuesday contributed $162 million, with Wednesday following at $104.6 million and Thursday delivering $66 million. Friday concluded with approximately $87 million. Related ETF capital flow data demonstrated six consecutive trading sessions featuring positive net purchases.
Meanwhile, an anonymous trader established a $99 million Ethereum position around $2,660, anticipating upward price movement. The strategy employs 25x leverage, amplifying both potential profits and potential losses. A decline approaching $2,552 would force liquidation of the position unless additional margin is deposited.
