- Shares climbed more than 11% during after-hours trading session
- The platform becomes the second dedicated social media firm in the index alongside Meta

- Prior to the announcement, shares were trading down 31% for the year
Shares of Reddit (RDDT) climbed over 11% during Thursday’s after-hours session following S&P Dow Jones Indices’ announcement that the social media platform will enter the S&P 500 index on August 18.
The platform will take the place of AvalonBay Communities, which exits the benchmark after being acquired by Equity Residential, another S&P 500 constituent.
This development positions Reddit as just the second dedicated social media platform within the S&P 500. Meta holds the other slot. Both Pinterest and Snap remain excluded due to smaller market capitalizations.
Twitter previously maintained S&P 500 membership before Elon Musk took the company private in 2022. The platform, now rebranded as X, operates under SpaceX’s private ownership.
S&P 500 membership requires companies to maintain a minimum market capitalization of $22.7 billion while satisfying specific profitability, liquidity, and public float criteria. Reddit has satisfied all requirements.
The after-hours rally represents a typical market response to index addition announcements. Portfolio managers tracking the S&P 500 must purchase newly added stocks to maintain benchmark alignment, creating immediate buying pressure.
Consistent Revenue Acceleration Above 60%
When Reddit released second-quarter earnings in late July, the company extended its remarkable revenue growth streak to eight straight quarters above 60%. This consistent performance stands out in today’s market environment.
However, impressive revenue numbers haven’t prevented share price weakness. Prior to Thursday’s closing bell, RDDT had declined 31% since the start of the year.
The Q2 earnings release included cautionary language. Management noted that “search referrals were choppy,” highlighting concerns about the platform’s reliance on Google for attracting new users.
CEO Steve Huffman identified Google’s AI Overviews, which utilize Gemini technology, as contributing to this inconsistency. With Google increasingly displaying answers directly within search results, fewer users navigate to Reddit’s platform.
AI Revenue Partnerships Established, Market Seeks Expansion
The company has executed data licensing agreements valued at hundreds of millions with both OpenAI and Google, granting these tech giants access to Reddit’s extensive forum content for AI model training purposes.
While these partnerships generate incremental revenue, the investment community anticipated additional similar arrangements. The artificial intelligence opportunity hasn’t yet generated the market enthusiasm initially expected.
Following its March 2024 initial public offering, Reddit has concentrated on capturing a larger portion of digital advertising revenue, directly competing with industry leaders Meta and Google.
Operating from San Francisco, the platform manages discussion forums spanning thousands of subjects and continues expanding its advertising technology infrastructure to capture greater advertiser investment.
Thursday’s index rebalancing announcement also includes Sun Communities’ promotion to the S&P MidCap 400, where it will replace Webster Financial.
Reddit’s official entry into the S&P 500 becomes effective prior to market opening on August 18.
