Peter Thiel’s Fund Discloses Major Investment in Argentine Oil Producer
According to a regulatory document filed on Friday, Thiel Macro LLC held approximately 1.2 million American Depositary Shares of Vista Energy as of the end of June. The investment was valued at roughly $76 million based on prevailing market prices. As a result, Vista Energy emerged as one of the most prominent holdings in the hedge fund’s portfolio during the second quarter.
Within Thiel Macro’s disclosed equity investments, the Vista Energy stake ranked second only to its Amazon holdings. The fund maintained 495,000 Amazon shares valued at approximately $118 million at quarter-end. Consequently, the Vista position constituted a substantial portion of the fund’s publicly reported equity investments.
Beyond Vista Energy, Thiel Macro expanded its footprint across the energy landscape by initiating positions in multiple power and utility companies. New holdings included American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy, Vistra, and X-Energy. Notably, six out of seven fresh positions disclosed by the fund involved energy sector companies.
Argentine Energy Giant Accelerates Vaca Muerta Development
As Argentina’s premier independent energy corporation, Vista Energy concentrates primarily on unconventional shale oil extraction. The company maintains significant operations in Vaca Muerta, which stands as Argentina’s most strategic unconventional energy basin. Its activities have intensified as the nation pursues increased hydrocarbon output and expanded global energy trade.
To date, Vista has committed over $6.5 billion in capital investments across Argentina while scaling production capabilities and supporting infrastructure. The firm has leveraged Vaca Muerta’s extensive shale deposits to consolidate its leadership within Argentina’s petroleum industry. Simultaneously, enhanced operational environments have sparked growing interest in firms with Argentine energy exposure.
Under President Javier Milei’s leadership, the government has implemented sweeping economic reforms aimed at attracting international investment capital across multiple sectors. The energy industry occupies a central role in this approach, given Argentina’s abundant oil, natural gas, lithium, and mineral deposits. These policy initiatives provide crucial context for Vista Energy’s rising prominence among global institutional investors.
Thiel Strengthens Argentine Ties Through Personal and Financial Moves
The billionaire investor relocated to Buenos Aires with his family earlier in 2024 after departing the United States. Following his April arrival, he has cultivated deeper relationships with key officials within the Milei government. His Vista Energy investment now represents a substantial financial commitment to Argentina’s burgeoning energy sector.
Since establishing residence in Argentina, Thiel has engaged with Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Deregulation Minister Federico Sturzenegger. He has also connected with Santiago Caputo, a close presidential adviser, as the administration pursues widespread economic transformation. Earlier in the year, Thiel participated in conversations with President Milei himself regarding strategies to attract overseas capital.
Vista Energy stock appreciated 5.67% to close at $72.18 after the investment disclosure became public, sustaining robust trading activity. The $76 million stake establishes the energy company as one of Thiel Macro’s largest confirmed public equity positions. The filing further confirms the fund’s deliberate strategic shift toward energy infrastructure and power generation companies.
