The Pentagon has finalized contracts totaling $2.2 billion with five defense contractors to deploy compact nuclear reactors at military facilities nationwide. Initial reactor activation is scheduled for September 2028.
Dubbed the Janus Program after the Roman deity symbolizing beginnings and transitions, this initiative was introduced last year to provide military sites with autonomous energy capabilities independent of civilian power infrastructure.
According to Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, the initiative prioritizes energy security. “We are establishing the energy independence required to maintain global combat readiness without dependency on external power networks that may be compromised,” he explained.
The contract awards designate specific installations for each company. Antares Nuclear received Fort Bragg in North Carolina. BWX Technologies will develop at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems secured Fort Hood in Texas. Radiant Industries won Fort Benning in Georgia, with their agreement worth up to $750 million covering as many as 15 units. Westinghouse Government Services will construct at Fort Drum in New York.
Output capacity for individual reactors ranges from 1 to 20 megawatts based on specific design specifications. These installations will supplement rather than replace existing grid connections at the military facilities.
Why the Military Is Interested
Current Army backup power systems depend on diesel fuel. During military operations, transporting fuel to isolated positions presents significant logistical obstacles. Nuclear microreactors operate continuously for extended periods without requiring fuel replenishment, offering a strategic advantage for defense applications.
Contrasting with conventional nuclear facilities, microreactors feature factory fabrication and modular transportation capabilities. Construction costs are substantially lower than traditional reactors, which frequently exceed $10 billion and require approximately ten years to complete.
Several innovative designs, including those developed by Radiant and Valar Atomics, employ helium gas cooling systems rather than water. This approach enhances safety profiles and minimizes catastrophic failure risks.
Private Investment Is Growing
Private equity is tracking government spending in this sector. Radiant has secured more than $500 million from backers including Andreessen Horowitz and holds a $1.9 billion valuation. Valar Atomics completed a $1 billion fundraising round this month at a $6 billion valuation. Antares closed a $370 million round last month.
Several microreactor developers have already entered public markets. Nano Nuclear commands approximately $1 billion in market capitalization. Terra Innovatum is valued at $625 million. Deep Fission approaches $400 million.
Financial backers anticipate that defense contracts will validate the technology’s reliability and create pathways to commercial markets, particularly AI data centers requiring substantial power capacity on accelerated timelines.
However, skepticism persists. Detractors argue that security expenditures alone render remote commercial installations economically impractical. Nuclear facilities mandate continuous armed security, which remains cost-effective on military property but becomes prohibitively expensive at civilian locations. Regulatory compliance expenses present additional obstacles.
Pentagon projections indicate private sector investment will match federal commitments with billions in additional capital.
