On Monday, OpenAI announced its ChatGPT advertising division has achieved a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. The artificial intelligence company presented this achievement as evidence of successful business diversification before its anticipated stock market launch.
The advertising operation launched approximately 200 days ago. It complements existing revenue channels such as enterprise agreements, individual subscriptions, and API usage fees.
OpenAI initiated advertising trials within ChatGPT across the United States in February. The strategic direction attracted scrutiny from competitor Anthropic, which centered its inaugural Super Bowl advertisement campaign around OpenAI’s advertising initiative.
Global Expansion Reaches More Than 40 Nations
The ChatGPT advertising platform has extended its reach to over 40 countries worldwide. This week, OpenAI activated its self-service advertising system for marketing professionals across India, European markets, the Middle East, and North African territories.
OpenAI introduced advertisements in India during the previous week, representing one of ChatGPT’s most significant user bases. Fifty commercial brands joined the initial deployment, supported by agency collaborations with WPP and Omnicom. Indian advertisers gain access to the self-serve platform starting September 4, requiring a minimum daily investment of approximately $7.60.
Promotional content appears exclusively for individuals using the no-cost tier and those subscribed to the Go membership level. OpenAI emphasized that advertisements carry transparent identification and maintain no influence over ChatGPT’s response generation. Marketing partners receive no visibility into users’ confidential interactions.
The organization unveiled cost-per-click pricing mechanisms earlier in 2026. This pricing structure provides advertisers with payment options based solely on user engagement clicks, supplementing the established cost-per-thousand-impressions framework. OpenAI additionally eliminated the previous $50,000 minimum expenditure threshold upon launching its self-service Ads Manager platform to all American enterprises.
Financial Performance and Public Offering Strategy
OpenAI has established a $2.5 billion advertising revenue objective for the present calendar year. The organization simultaneously pursues total annualized revenue surpassing $40 billion, representing approximately double its performance level from late 2025.
During 2026’s second quarter, OpenAI generated $6.7 billion in revenue, increasing from $5.7 billion recorded in the preceding quarter.
The artificial intelligence firm recorded a $38.5 billion net loss throughout 2025 against $13.07 billion in revenue. It continues preparation for the scheduled 2027 initial public offering while facing demands to validate its $852 billion valuation before potential investors.
OpenAI indicated its upcoming initiatives will deliver advertisements to additional geographic markets while introducing innovative formats, purchasing mechanisms, and analytics capabilities. The company expressed intentions to investigate additional methods enabling commercial entities to engage with users throughout the ChatGPT platform.
