Northrop Grumman (NOC) has reached a significant integration benchmark in the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile initiative alongside the U.S. Air Force. The partners successfully assembled a complete inert missile in vertical configuration at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, representing crucial progress toward the scheduled 2027 flight demonstration.
At the time of the milestone announcement, NOC stock was changing hands at $526.78, showing a slight decline of 0.12%.

The integration operation, designated Pathfinder, extended over a four-month period. The process encompassed shipping missile sections from multiple locations nationwide to California, followed by complete vertical assembly of all stages, propulsion systems, protective fairing, and associated components at a designated test platform.
Following successful completion, the assembled missile was disassembled. The primary objective was demonstrating proper component fit and validating safe handling and integration procedures at an operational launch facility.
The exercise also evaluated specialized transportation equipment, mobile crane procedures, and launch pad interface systems.
Critical Design Milestone Achieved
Concurrent with the assembly operation, Northrop Grumman and the Air Force’s 719th Test Squadron successfully completed the initial Critical Flight Design Review. This evaluation verified that missile design maturity and hardware validation satisfy Air Force specifications for performance parameters, safety protocols, and program timeline.
“This vertical assembly demonstrates the momentum toward test launching Sentinel in 2027 and having missiles on alert by the early 2030s,” said Amanda Davis, vice president and general manager of strategic deterrent systems at Northrop Grumman.
According to the company, the program continues progressing toward its inaugural live flight demonstration in 2027. Full initial operational capability is planned for deployment during the early 2030s.

The Sentinel system represents the next-generation replacement for the legacy Minuteman III ICBM and constitutes the ground-based component of America’s nuclear triad, complementing sea-launched ballistic missiles and strategic bomber aircraft.
Northrop Grumman coordinates a collaborative network exceeding 500 supplier organizations and employing over 10,000 personnel across the program. The Sentinel weapon system features a design lifespan extending to 2075, providing NOC with potential long-term revenue streams spanning development, manufacturing, and sustainment activities.
The Pathfinder exercise validates that Sentinel is transitioning from digital engineering and subsystem testing phases toward physical integration as a complete weapon system.
The upcoming major evaluation will present greater challenges. An operational flight test will assess propulsion performance, guidance accuracy, control systems, and integrated system functionality in ways that static assembly exercises cannot replicate.
Adhering to the 2027 flight test timeline represents a critical program milestone. Concurrently, the company and Air Force are advancing parallel efforts on launch facility modernization, supply chain preparation, and equipment necessary for operational silo deployment.
The program must successfully complete flight testing and additional qualification activities before any missiles achieve operational alert status.
