- Alongside Avalanche, ICE has partnered with tZERO as a design collaborator for its tokenized securities infrastructure.
The New York Stock Exchange has conducted approximately one year of technical evaluation of Avalanche blockchain infrastructure as it advances its initiative to tokenize U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds.
During Thursday’s Avalanche Summit held in New York, Ava Labs President Charley Cooper publicly revealed details of the ongoing testing relationship.
Cooper explained that NYSE has been investigating how Avalanche’s technology stack could interface with the exchange’s current operational infrastructure.
The evaluation has extended well beyond mere technical compatibility assessments. Cooper noted that NYSE representatives have also probed Ava Labs regarding its commercial strategy and whether the organization comprehends the operational requirements of operating a major securities exchange.
Intercontinental Exchange Assesses Avalanche for Securities Tokenization
Cooper characterized the working relationship between Ava Labs and Intercontinental Exchange, NYSE’s parent entity, as substantial and collaborative. However, he stopped short of announcing that Avalanche had been definitively chosen for the tokenization initiative.
Michael Blaugrund, who serves as ICE’s Head of Strategic Initiatives, also addressed the partnership during the Avalanche Summit proceedings.
Blaugrund indicated that ICE has maintained active engagement with the Avalanche development team throughout its evaluation of various blockchain platforms. He noted that Avalanche satisfied numerous criteria that ICE was analyzing.
The exchange first unveiled its tokenized securities strategy in January. NYSE announced it was building infrastructure for facilitating trading and blockchain-based settlement of U.S. stocks and ETFs.
The entire proposed framework remains contingent upon obtaining regulatory authorization.
NYSE’s strategy involves integrating its current Pillar matching engine with blockchain-powered systems that would manage post-trade processing activities.
The infrastructure being developed is architected to accommodate multiple blockchain networks for settlement and custody operations. This multi-chain approach indicates that Avalanche represents one potential technology option under consideration rather than a finalized selection.
In August, ICE revealed a distinct partnership with tZERO. That firm was designated as a design partner responsible for developing infrastructure to support the NYSE-connected tokenized securities marketplace.
ICE has yet to make any public statement identifying which specific blockchain network or networks will ultimately power the platform.
Blockchain Innovation Enters Traditional Securities Market
Tokenization enables conventional financial instruments like corporate equity shares to be digitally represented and transferred using blockchain-based infrastructure.
NYSE’s approach would implement this technology for U.S. equities and ETFs while maintaining its proven trading engine as the core operational component.
Cooper also explored the potential for extended trading hours with tokenized securities. He suggested that certain trading venues might introduce 24-hour weekday trading capabilities within the coming year.
He acknowledged uncertainty about whether the initial venues offering such extended hours would be major established exchanges like NYSE, the London Stock Exchange, or CME.
Cooper additionally referenced an SEC innovation exemption announced Thursday, which he indicated permits specific types of blockchain-based trading activity involving tokenized equities.
Currently, ICE remains in the evaluation phase with blockchain technology providers while collaborating with tZERO on comprehensive platform architecture. Although Avalanche has completed a year of rigorous testing, NYSE has not issued confirmation that it will deploy the network for its tokenized securities infrastructure.
