The Ethereum-focused development firm will now operate Chainlink nodes that power CCIP and the platform’s established Data Feeds. This strategic shift bolsters Chainlink’s infrastructure capabilities as traditional financial entities increasingly engage with public blockchain technology.
Nethermind Embraces Chainlink Node Operations
Under this new partnership, Nethermind assumes dual responsibilities as a Chainlink node operator and strategic technology contributor. The organization will deliver infrastructure services, development tools, and technical integration assistance for projects developing blockchain solutions. Simultaneously, all cross-chain activities will concentrate on Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, commonly referred to as CCIP.
CCIP facilitates asset transfers and data communication across distinct blockchain ecosystems using Chainlink’s decentralized infrastructure framework. The protocol employs independent node operators alongside robust risk management mechanisms to validate cross-chain transactions throughout supported networks. Consequently, Nethermind will leverage its substantial blockchain engineering capabilities to enhance infrastructure underpinning these critical services.
Previously, the company maintained decentralized verifier infrastructure as part of LayerZero’s cross-chain communication framework. LayerZero’s architecture enables applications to designate decentralized verifier networks responsible for validating messages transmitted between disparate blockchains. Nevertheless, Nethermind has terminated that verifier arrangement and redirected its cross-chain infrastructure focus exclusively toward Chainlink.
Recent Cross-Chain Security Incidents Provide Broader Context
This infrastructure transition occurs amid significant developments affecting LayerZero and Chainlink throughout 2026. During April, malicious actors compromised Kelp DAO’s LayerZero-integrated bridge, extracting approximately $290 million worth of rsETH tokens. The breach involved a fraudulent cross-chain message facilitated by a configuration dependent on a solitary verifier.
Subsequently, Kelp DAO migrated rsETH cross-chain infrastructure to Chainlink while challenging LayerZero’s characterization of its security setup. LayerZero refuted these assertions, maintaining that the project had reduced its verifier count from multiple entities to a single verifier. Following this incident, LayerZero implemented more stringent requirements for applications utilizing its decentralized verifier network architecture.
Nonetheless, Nethermind has not explicitly connected its strategic decision to the Kelp DAO breach or other LayerZero security matters. The company’s official statement characterized the transition as resulting from thorough evaluation and forward-looking infrastructure strategy. Additionally, Nethermind has not released specific technical benchmarks employed to assess Chainlink versus LayerZero throughout its review process.
Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Infrastructure Ecosystem Expands
Several prominent organizations have similarly redirected cross-chain operations toward Chainlink in recent periods. BitGo designated CCIP as the sole cross-chain infrastructure solution for Wrapped Bitcoin, replacing its previous LayerZero integration. The Aave protocol has also broadened its CCIP implementation to support deposits, withdrawals, vault optimization, and additional cross-chain asset management functions.
On August 18, Wyoming’s Stable Token Commission finalized its own LayerZero-to-Chainlink transition following a state-mandated security evaluation. The commission chose CCIP as the exclusive cross-chain provider for its Frontier Stable Token initiative. However, Wyoming authorities have not disclosed comprehensive technical conclusions from their infrastructure analysis.
Nethermind contributes substantial Ethereum infrastructure expertise to Chainlink’s growing network of independent node operators. Established in 2017, the firm develops an Ethereum execution client while delivering security services, research capabilities, and institutional blockchain solutions. This expanded role channels that expertise into oracle infrastructure and cross-chain systems facilitating institutional blockchain integration.
