NEAR Protocol has emerged as one of the cryptocurrency market’s top performers this autumn. The digital asset began September trading around $1.80 before surging past the $5 threshold by early October.

This upward trajectory resulted in approximately 183% appreciation, based on figures referenced by Grayscale. The performance significantly exceeded the wider AI-focused cryptocurrency segment, which recorded 54% growth during the identical timeframe.
A substantial portion of the initial momentum originated from derivatives trading activity. Santiment’s data revealed that dollar-denominated open interest surged 119% between Sept. 13 and Sept. 20.
Meanwhile, open interest denominated in NEAR tokens increased by only approximately 21% during that same period. This discrepancy indicates that leverage and token appreciation contributed more significantly than the creation of fresh trading positions.
Funding rates escalated to roughly 1.6 times their two-month median level. Market participants have been scrutinizing technical charts for indicators of future directional movement.
Technical analyst Nebraskangooner identified a pennant formation developing on NEAR’s price chart, noting that traders should monitor this pennant for a breakout signaling the subsequent major price movement.
Spot trading for NEAR also became available on Hyperliquid between Sept. 22-23. This addition introduced direct NEAR/USDC pair trading alongside the platform’s perpetual futures market, which maintained open interest approaching $344 million.
The most significant development occurred Sept. 29 when Bitwise introduced the inaugural U.S. spot NEAR exchange-traded fund. The investment product trades on NYSE Arca using the ticker symbol NRR and carries a 0.75% annual management fee.
By Oct. 6, the ETF had accumulated approximately $58 million during its debut week. Bitwise’s analytical team also established a $562.81 price projection for the year 2030.
AI Agent Technology Anchors Investment Thesis
NEAR’s value proposition has increasingly concentrated on AI agent functionality rather than broad blockchain applications. Grayscale characterized the network as infrastructure for agentic commerce, enabling autonomous agents to commission services and execute payments independently.
The analysis highlighted NEAR’s chain abstraction capabilities, which enable agents to navigate multiple blockchains with reduced operational steps. Additionally, co-founder Illia Polosukhin co-created the foundational Transformer architecture paper that underpins contemporary AI models.
NEAR AI broadened its confidential-inference capabilities through a collaborative agreement with OpenRouter announced Sept. 28. Subsequently, NEAR One introduced SPICE, an architectural system that decouples transaction processing from consensus mechanisms to enhance network scalability.
Market analyst Altcoin Sherpa expressed a more measured perspective, stating he would prefer to observe consolidation and sideways movement for another one to two weeks before anticipating another upward leg, emphasizing that NEAR’s trajectory remains heavily dependent on bitcoin’s performance.
Wallet Migration Presents Additional Challenge
NEAR’s community confronts a distinct operational change unconnected to market valuation. MyNearWallet will discontinue service on Oct. 31, with users being redirected toward Meteor Wallet or near.com as alternative solutions.
The transition process has included step-by-step migration assistance since August, with diminished functionality beginning this month. All user assets and staking arrangements remain secured on-chain throughout the process.
Trading activity has remained robust during the transition period. NEAR experienced a pullback to the $4.70-$4.80 range on Oct. 5 before recovering to trade between $5.19 and $5.25 the following session.
Technical resistance is positioned near $5.39 to $5.44, while support maintains at $5.13. A decisive close above resistance could establish a pathway toward $5.56 followed by the psychological $6.00 level.
NEAR’s weekly Relative Strength Index moderated to approximately 75 after approaching 85 in late September. The 50-day moving average remains positioned near $2.90, well beneath current trading levels.
