Shares of Micron Technology (MU) advanced nearly 2% during Thursday’s premarket session to reach $942.06, buoyed by positive developments from India and an overall uptick in market sentiment. Technology stocks received additional support as Nasdaq futures rose 1.05% while S&P 500 futures advanced 0.82%.
The upward movement followed Micron’s announcement that its $2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and testing operation in Sanand, Gujarat has officially begun commercial production. The facility is currently delivering completed DRAM and NAND memory solutions to clients across the globe.
Chief Executive Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted that the Sanand operation already possesses production capacity surpassing the memory requirements of India’s complete laptop market. Additionally, the company has delivered its inaugural India-manufactured memory modules to Dell Technologies, specifically for laptops produced within India.
The Gujarat facility operates as an assembly and testing site rather than a wafer fabrication plant. It receives sophisticated DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s international manufacturing operations and processes them into completed memory and storage solutions. Upon full ramp-up, the initial phase will encompass over 500,000 square feet of cleanroom infrastructure.
This year, Micron anticipates assembling and testing tens of millions of semiconductor chips at the location. Production volumes are projected to scale to hundreds of millions by 2027.
Advanced Memory Solution Addresses AI Requirements
Micron’s Indian operations align with the company’s comprehensive AI memory strategy. On September 15, the chipmaker showcased a 512GB DDR5 RDIMM achieving speeds up to 9,200 MT/s. Both Advanced Micro Devices and Intel are presently validating this module. Mass production is anticipated to launch in the latter half of 2027.
Mehrotra articulated the market transformation succinctly: “The world is going to need memory that is faster, denser, and far more efficient at power. And Micron builds that memory.”
Micron’s direct workforce in India exceeds 7,000 employees. Engineering teams based in Bangalore and Hyderabad have generated more than 3,700 patents, inventions and technical disclosures.
Financial Results Due September 30
