According to Dylan Taylor, the founder and chief executive of Voyager Technologies, humanity is on track to establish permanent lunar operations within the next ten years. In an interview with Fortune, Taylor suggested that by the mid-2030s, observers on Earth will witness illuminated structures dotting the moon’s surface.
“We’ll have a moon base, people living and working on the moon,” Taylor stated.
The Voyager Technologies leader emphasized that off-world human presence isn’t unprecedented, noting that the International Space Station has maintained continuous human occupation for over two and a half decades. The current challenge, he explained, involves expanding from a handful of specialized astronauts to a much larger working population.
Career Opportunities Beyond Earth
The initial wave of lunar employment, according to Taylor, will concentrate on extracting valuable materials, establishing orbital computing facilities, and constructing electrical distribution systems. He expresses skepticism that robotic alternatives such as Elon Musk’s Optimus will prove sufficient for these complex tasks.
“You’re not going to be able to program Optimus to do everything on the moon,” Taylor explained. “You’re going to have to have humans to figure it out.”
Taylor brings significant credibility to these projections. After accumulating wealth through ventures in electronics, financial services, and property development, he shifted his full attention to the space sector at age 37.
His space investment portfolio began in 2007 with Space Adventures, followed by early-stage funding for Relativity Space alongside entrepreneur Mark Cuban. He launched Space For Humanity in 2017, a charitable organization dedicated to democratizing access to commercial space travel.
Voyager Technologies came into existence in 2019. Following its NYSE debut last year at a $3.8 billion valuation, the company elevated Taylor to billionaire status at age 53. The firm currently develops the successor platform to the International Space Station and maintains several contracts with NASA.
Taylor experienced spaceflight firsthand aboard a Blue Origin mission in 2021, joining an exclusive group of just over 600 individuals who have traveled beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
The Red Planet Remains Plan B
Regarding Mars colonization, Taylor adopts a more reserved perspective. He characterizes the distant planet as insurance against catastrophic Earth-based events rather than a near-term settlement priority.
“The moon and the Earth are really the same planetary system,” Taylor observed, concurring with Musk’s philosophy that humanity needs redundancy to survive potential asteroid impacts or similar disasters.
He recognizes that intense cosmic radiation exposure and the enormous distance separating Mars from Earth create substantially greater obstacles compared to lunar development. Nevertheless, he believes a modest Martian outpost could eventually materialize, populated by individuals possessing what he describes as the “adventurer gene.”
These ambitious projections find company among other prominent figures. Musk currently anticipates crewed Mars expeditions beginning in 2028, despite his earlier 2016 forecast of a 2024 arrival missing the mark. Jeff Bezos has projected that millions of humans will inhabit space by 2045, with automated systems performing surface operations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggests that current university students will eventually pursue lucrative space-based careers that render today’s professions obsolete.
Taylor maintains confidence that sufficient numbers of people possess his pioneering spirit, making both a lunar labor force and subsequent Martian settlement inevitable rather than speculative.
