- His initial purchase amounted to approximately 1,500 pounds ($2,000) when BTC traded below $4
- Intersango ceased operations in late 2012 and completely disappeared by early 2014
- CEL Solicitors employed blockchain tracing technology to locate a wallet containing over 5,500 BTC connected to previous Intersango customers
- The investor successfully retrieved assets currently valued at roughly $4.5 million
In a remarkable turn of events, a UK-based cryptocurrency investor has successfully reclaimed bitcoin valued at approximately $4.5 million after being locked out of his digital wallet for more than thirteen years.
The individual, who goes by the alias “Chris” for privacy reasons, made his initial bitcoin purchase in December 2011 using Britcoin, a British cryptocurrency platform that subsequently rebranded as Intersango. The platform ceased all trading activities by the conclusion of 2012 and vanished entirely from the internet by the beginning of 2014, stranding Chris without any means to retrieve his digital assets.
Chris’s original outlay totaled approximately 1,500 British pounds, equivalent to about $2,000 at the time. He entered the market when bitcoin was trading at less than $4 per coin.
A Decade of Painful Observations
Throughout the years, Chris could only watch helplessly as bitcoin’s valuation soared, all while assuming his investment had vanished permanently.
“The worst thing was seeing Bitcoin grow and knowing what I could have done with the money,” he said.
At the moment he lost access to his account, his cryptocurrency holdings had appreciated to approximately $5,400. He characterized the experience as financially crushing during that period.
“I had a young family, a new home and it was money I couldn’t afford to lose,” he said.
The Path to Retrieval
Legal specialists at CEL Solicitors, operating in conjunction with their affiliated entity The Crypto Tracing Experts, deployed sophisticated blockchain analysis tools to trace the missing funds. The team discovered a digital wallet presumed to contain assets belonging to former Intersango platform users, holding in excess of 5,500 bitcoināa sum presently worth approximately $421 million.
Chris was able to reclaim his share of those holdings. With bitcoin currently trading near $76,500, his recovered cryptocurrency is now worth an estimated $4.5 million.
According to Ryan Sweetnam, who serves as director of financial litigation at CEL, the recovery operation demanded extensive documentation spanning almost fifteen years, including banking statements that verified the initial transaction.
The procedure proved far from straightforward. Claimants were required to present compelling proof of ownership to successfully recover their assets.
CEL Solicitors has indicated that additional former Intersango platform users might qualify for fund recovery, contingent upon their ability to demonstrate legitimate ownership of bitcoin held on the exchange.
Chris has revealed plans to allocate a portion of his recovered wealth toward helping his son eliminate mortgage debt and settling his own outstanding financial obligations.
He has also expressed interest in retaining some bitcoin holdings, despite harboring concerns regarding market volatility and the cryptocurrency sector’s regulatory uncertainties.
“I want to keep some Bitcoin to see if the value rises again but if I do it does make me nervous in case it goes down,” he said.
This recovery demonstrates that cryptocurrency assets lost through defunct early exchanges may remain recoverable through advanced tracing technology and appropriate legal assistance.
