TLDR:
- Elon Musk reportedly in regular contact with Putin since late 2022
- NASA Administrator Bill Nelson calls for investigation of reported communications
- SpaceX has multiple contracts with NASA and Defense Department worth $3 billion
- Kremlin spokesperson claims only one phone call between Musk and Putin
- Musk has recently increased support for Trump, donating $120 million to pro-Trump PAC
Reports of regular communications between Elon Musk and Russian President Vladimir Putin have sparked concerns from U.S. government officials, particularly those overseeing space and defense contracts with Musk’s companies.
The Wall Street Journal revealed that Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has maintained regular contact with Putin since late 2022. These conversations reportedly covered personal matters, business interests, and geopolitical issues. In one instance, Putin reportedly asked Musk to prevent Starlink satellite activation over Taiwan, a request that would benefit Chinese interests.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson addressed these claims at the Semafor World Economy Summit on October 25.
“I don’t know that that story is true. I think it should be investigated,”
Nelson stated. He emphasized that if confirmed, these communications would raise concerns for NASA, the Department of Defense, and intelligence agencies.
The timing of these revelations coincides with Musk’s increased political activity. He has donated approximately $120 million to a super PAC supporting former President Donald Trump’s campaign. Musk recently appeared at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap.
SpaceX’s relationship with the U.S. government involves extensive contracts. The company works with 17 federal agencies through nearly 100 contracts, valued at $3 billion. SpaceX plays a crucial role in NASA’s space missions, as demonstrated by the recent successful return of NASA astronauts from the International Space Station using a SpaceX Dragon capsule.
The Kremlin has responded to these reports through spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who maintains that Putin and Musk have only spoken once. According to Peskov, this single conversation focused on “space as well as current and future technologies.”
House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) expressed concern about the situation. In a statement, he criticized both Musk and Trump, suggesting they “don’t understand or care about U.S. national security, only their own personal interests.”
Trump’s campaign has defended Musk, with national press secretary Karoline Leavitt describing him as a “once-in-a-generation industry leader.” Trump has previously indicated he would appoint Musk to lead a government efficiency commission if reelected.
The relationship between Musk’s companies and Ukraine has evolved since Russia’s invasion. While Starlink initially provided satellite services to Ukraine, Musk has since restricted Ukrainian military use of the system. Reports indicate that Russian forces have been using Starlink technology.
The matter raises questions about oversight of private companies that handle sensitive government contracts. NASA officials note that their primary contact with SpaceX is through its president and COO, Gwynne Shotwell, rather than Musk directly.
Federal agencies have not yet announced any formal investigation into the reported communications. The exact nature and content of the alleged conversations between Musk and Putin remain unclear.
Recent contracts between SpaceX and various government agencies continue as planned. On Friday, October 25, SpaceX successfully completed another NASA mission, demonstrating the ongoing operational relationship between the company and the space agency.
Musk has not directly responded to the Wall Street Journal’s report. He has previously rejected claims about communication with Putin, stating his companies “have done more to undermine Russia than anything.”
The situation highlights the complex relationships between private technology companies, government contracts, and international relations in the modern space industry.
