Texas Grid Operator’s Announcement Energizes Sector
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) revealed more than 5 gigawatts of conditional power capacity designated for artificial intelligence infrastructure deployments. This development provided a tailwind for multiple digital infrastructure companies.
Cipher Mining (CIFR) and Core Scientific (CORZ) experienced similar upward price movements on Wednesday as the ERCOT announcement highlighted the strategic value of power assets controlled by these operators.
Securing substantial electricity resources has become essential for businesses expanding AI data center operations, which consume significantly more power than conventional computing facilities.
Developments at the Sweetwater Facility
IREN’s 2-gigawatt Sweetwater Hub located in Texas obtained conditional Base Load classification through ERCOT’s Batch Zero allocation process, which was announced September 8.
The facility encompasses Sweetwater 1 with 1.4 GW capacity and Sweetwater 2 with 600 MW capacity. Combined, these assets represent part of IREN’s larger 5-GW global data center development pipeline.
The company has completed energizing the high-voltage substation at Sweetwater 1. IREN is currently constructing 300 MW of gross data center capacity at this location, with completion scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.
It’s important to note that ERCOT’s designations remain conditional pending additional regulatory approvals.
On the financial front, AI Cloud Services revenue expanded dramatically to $128.8 million in fiscal 2026 versus only $16.4 million in the prior fiscal year. The company elevated its fiscal 2026 annual recurring revenue guidance to $4.0 billion from the previous $3.4 billion estimate.
This rapid growth, however, has come at a substantial cost. IREN reported a $702.6 million net loss for fiscal 2026, with $638.8 million stemming from impairment charges related to the retirement of legacy bitcoin mining hardware.
The stock exhibits a beta of 4.28, positioning it among the more volatile equities in the sector. IREN maintains a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.80 and commands a market capitalization of approximately $16.79 billion.
From a technical analysis perspective, IREN was trading above its 20-day and 50-day moving averages but continued trading below its 100-day and 200-day moving averages. The Relative Strength Index registered 53.50, indicating neutral momentum. Technical resistance appears near the $49 level, while support is identified around $35.
Wall Street consensus currently rates the stock as “Moderate Buy” with an average price target of $82.93. Bernstein maintains the most optimistic outlook with a $100 price target.
