Former President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, is set to introduce a digital currency named LAPTOP on September 9. This cryptocurrency will operate on Base, Coinbase’s proprietary blockchain infrastructure, featuring a one-billion-token maximum supply.
The Wall Street Journal broke the news on September 7. Biden revealed the cryptocurrency on X, sharing the $LAPTOP ticker ahead of its midweek debut.
The token’s name alludes to Biden’s personal laptop, which sparked political debate during the 2020 election cycle. The device’s data became a contentious topic in news coverage before voters chose between his father and Donald Trump.
Token Distribution Details
Founders will control 30% of total tokens. This allocation will remain inaccessible for half a year, then unlock progressively across 24 months.
An additional 20% is designated for dual airdrop phases. Recipients include those who suffered financial losses on Trump’s TRUMP memecoin. The list also encompasses Hunter Biden’s newsletter audience, personal network members, and followers of journalist Andrew Callaghan.
Twenty percent more has been earmarked for philanthropic contributions, trading liquidity, platform partnerships, market stabilization services, and operational expenses including legal fees.
The final allocation links to an automated destruction protocol. As much as 30% of tokens face permanent elimination if specific predetermined milestones occur within designated windows.
Destruction Mechanisms and Supply Economics
These milestones encompass scenarios such as a Democratic presidential victory in 2028, Bitcoin establishing fresh record prices, and LAPTOP’s market capitalization exceeding TRUMP’s.
Should any milestone go unmet by deadline, associated tokens will transfer to charitable organizations instead of being destroyed.
The TRUMP token debuted in January 2025, coinciding with Trump’s White House return. Following an initial price spike, it has declined approximately 97% from peak levels.
Analysis from Nansen’s blockchain tracking reveals that close to 989,000 digital wallets purchasing TRUMP have accumulated $3.81 billion in combined actual and paper losses through June 2026. Trump-connected organizations maintain control over 80% of TRUMP’s supply through a distribution timeline extending to January 2028.
In August, watchdog organization Public Citizen calculated that participants across five Trump-associated cryptocurrency initiatives faced minimum losses of $4.7 billion. Their research identified that the top 1% of profitable TRUMP wallets secured approximately $2.7 billion, representing roughly 80% of total profits.
Hunter Biden has openly criticized Trump’s cryptocurrency projects. In August, he characterized World Liberty Financial as “corruption at a scale we’ve never seen,” drawing parallels to the collapsed FTX platform.
Democratic lawmakers Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal formally requested Securities and Exchange Commission scrutiny of TRUMP in August, highlighting investor damages and Trump’s project revenue.
LAPTOP’s introduction coincides with pending congressional action on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. Senate cloture proceedings are slated for September 15.
The SEC has previously indicated that meme-based cryptocurrencies typically fall outside securities classification under current regulations.
