Firefly Aerospace (FLY) has secured a landmark agreement to conduct two Alpha rocket missions from Swedish territory, partnering with SSC Space to operate from the Esrange Space Center located in northern Sweden.
At the time of the public announcement, FLY stock showed a decline of 0.59%.
The scheduled launch window opens no earlier than 2028. These missions will accommodate both Swedish defense sector requirements and commercial rideshare opportunities.
According to the terms, SSC Space has acquired complete payload capacity rights for both orbital flights. This enables the organization to distribute available space among its governmental and private sector clients.
The partnership announcement comes after substantial infrastructure development at Esrange Space Center. Completed facilities include a command center for launches, a payload preparation building, a launch vehicle assembly structure, tracking and communications infrastructure, and comprehensive security and storage installations.
Construction work on the launch pad at Launch Complex 3C remains in progress. Both organizations are currently collaborating on this final construction phase.
Executive Statements
Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly, stated the agreement “validates the demand from European customers for long-awaited orbital launch capabilities directly from mainland Europe.”
Charlotta Sund, who serves as CEO and Group President at SSC Space, remarked that the partnership “underscores the strategic value of the transatlantic space capabilities we are building together with Firefly.”
This collaboration expands upon previously established transatlantic regulatory agreements necessary for conducting Alpha launches from European locations.

SSC Space manages the Esrange Space Center in Sweden’s northern region and maintains an international ground station network supporting satellite communications. The organization employs approximately 750 personnel with operations spanning every continent.
Established in 2017, Firefly Aerospace maintains its primary engineering, production, and testing operations in central Texas.
The Alpha launch system represents Firefly’s small-to-medium class orbital vehicle. Establishing launch capabilities from mainland Europe provides customers with additional geographic flexibility for reaching desired orbital trajectories.
This partnership establishes Esrange as a candidate for becoming Europe’s orbital launch center, an objective European space agencies have pursued for an extended period.
Both scheduled missions will transport combined government and commercial cargo, with SSC Space managing payload distribution for each flight.
Completion of the Launch Complex 3C pad construction represents the critical remaining milestone before the 2028 launch timeframe becomes operational.
