Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, has revealed an ambitious multi-year transformation initiative dubbed “Lean Ethereum,” positioning it as the blockchain’s “third major iteration” comparable in scope to the landmark 2022 Merge.
Buterin shared his vision through an X platform post on Saturday, following a gathering of Ethereum researchers in Berlin during late June. The comprehensive strategy is detailed at strawmap.org, a preliminary roadmap first presented by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake in February.
The strategic roadmap encompasses seven network enhancements extending through 2029, fundamentally altering transaction validation mechanisms, data storage architecture, and quantum computing defenses.
According to Buterin, the enhancement sequence will unfold across three to four years. He stated that “almost every major piece of the protocol will be replaced,” while emphasizing that current applications won’t require mandatory modifications.
He further indicated that Hegota, Ethereum’s second scheduled 2026 upgrade, will probably represent the final “pre-Lean” hard fork. Virtually all subsequent upgrades following this year will contribute to the reconstruction effort.
Revolutionary Data Storage Architecture
Among the most significant transformations is Ethereum’s data storage methodology. Currently, all information — spanning token balances to exchange smart contracts — exists within a singular, costly format.
The proposal introduces an economical secondary tier designed for streamlined applications. Buterin envisioned a potential Ethereum landscape in 2030 where this innovative storage layer accommodates 50 times the data capacity of its predecessor.
The majority of tokens, NFTs, and DeFi platforms could transition to this cost-effective tier. Buterin projected that migration would slash transaction fees by more than 10x for certain tokens. Sophisticated applications like Uniswap would remain on the current infrastructure, though migration remains optional for all applications.
Elevated Focus on Quantum Defense and Privacy
Buterin emphasized that quantum security has “shifted up a LOT in priority.” Emerging quantum computers pose threats to current blockchain cryptographic foundations, prompting the roadmap to mandate replacement of all susceptible elements before such technology matures.
The most pressing challenge involves developing a quantum-resistant architecture for blobs, the ephemeral data storage mechanism that Layer 2 networks utilize to maintain affordable fees.
Privacy considerations have similarly gained prominence. Buterin declared it is “no longer an afterthought” but rather “a first class goal.” Future capabilities will incorporate private transaction functionality from inception.
Buterin also identified RISC-V and leanISA as probable long-term successors to the Ethereum Virtual Machine, though he recognized this transition remains “still far away.”
The revelations follow the Ethereum Foundation’s staff reduction of 54 positions — approximately 20% of its total workforce — last month.
Not all observers share confidence in the proposed timeline. Researcher Dankrad Feist commended the strategy but suggested AI technologies could enable delivery within one year instead of three to four. Crypto analyst Ignas Fiodorovas expressed reservations, referencing the Foundation’s track record of delayed milestones. He noted the roadmap’s conspicuous absence of improved tokenomics for Ether.
