Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has purchased a $35 million compound in Austin, Texas, with plans to create a shared living space for his 11 children and some of their mothers, according to multiple sources familiar with the arrangement.
The property purchase includes a 14,400-square-foot Tuscan-style villa and a six-bedroom mansion located directly behind it. The compound represents Musk’s latest investment in Austin, where he already maintains a residence within a 10-minute walking distance of the new properties.
Shivon Zilis, an executive at Musk’s brain technology company Neuralink, has already moved into one of the homes with her three children. Zilis and Musk welcomed twins in 2021 and had a third child in 2024, all through IVF.
The housing arrangement aims to allow Musk’s younger children to “be a part of one another’s lives,” according to sources who spoke with The New York Times. The setup is designed to help Musk “schedule time” with his various children more efficiently.
The compound features enhanced security measures, with additional personnel visible whenever Musk is reported to be in the area. Public records show that Musk helped purchase the properties, though many details of the transactions remain private.
Musk’s children include three with musician Claire Boucher, known professionally as Grimes. Their children – X Æ A-Xii (4), Exa Dark Sideræl (2), and Techno Mechanicus (2) – have drawn attention for their unique names. However, Musk and Grimes are currently engaged in a legal battle over custody arrangements.

The timing of various pregnancies has created some family tension. Reports indicate that Grimes learned about Zilis’s twins with Musk only after their birth. Adding to the complexity, sources told The New York Times that Musk used a name previously chosen with Grimes – Valkyrie – for one of Zilis’s twins.
From his first marriage to Justine Wilson, Musk has five other children: twins Griffin and Vivian (20), and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian (18). Their first child passed away at 10 weeks old in 2002. Vivian, who is transgender, has publicly distanced herself from her father.
The Austin compound purchase stands in contrast to Musk’s previous stance on property ownership. In 2020, he announced plans to “own no house” and later claimed to live in a $50,000 tiny home at SpaceX’s launch site in Boca Chica, Texas.
The billionaire, whose net worth is estimated at $270 billion according to Forbes, has repeatedly expressed concerns about declining birth rates.
“It should be considered a national emergency to have kids,”
Musk posted on X in June. He has encouraged people to have “three or more kids, so humanity can grow.”
While Musk has relocated many of his business operations to Austin, including Tesla’s headquarters, he has recently spent time in Pennsylvania supporting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. The compound includes space for his adult children should they choose to visit.
Extra security personnel have been observed at the property during Musk’s visits to Austin. The Tuscan-style main villa features architectural elements reminiscent of Italian country estates, while the additional mansion provides ample space for the extended family arrangement.
When asked about the property purchase, Musk’s representatives did not provide comment. The exact layout and specific living arrangements within the compound remain private, though sources indicate the design allows for separate living spaces while maintaining family proximity.
Prior to this purchase, Musk sold most of his real estate holdings following his 2020 announcement about minimizing property ownership. The acquisition of the Austin compound marks a departure from that approach, reflecting his current focus on creating a shared space for his growing family.
