On October 28, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) activated its securities tokenization platform, making 34 digital securities available through its subsidiary, The Depository Trust Company (DTC). The system allows authorized financial institutions to generate blockchain-based representations of securities maintained in DTC custody.
Digital Tokens Mirror Physical Securities Held at DTC
Every token corresponds directly to one security held within DTC’s vaults. Investors maintain identical rights and regulatory protections as those holding conventional securities. DTC currently safeguards assets exceeding $114 trillion.
Authorized institutions possess the ability to transform holdings into blockchain tokens and reverse the process. Digital wallet transfers can occur continuously throughout the day and night, with DTC monitoring ownership modifications in near-instant fashion. These tokens carry identical CUSIP identification codes as their corresponding physical securities.
Global Financial Giants Onboard Tokenization Platform
DTC has executed access agreements with twenty participating institutions, featuring Bank of America, Barclays, Citi, Fidelity Investments, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, State Street and UBS. The corporation intends to expand participation further. In related developments, Bitget launched a platform for tokenized US equities and exchange-traded funds.
DTCC collaborated with over 150 organizations throughout the development phase. Technology partners and wallet providers include BitGo, Blockdaemon, Broadridge, Fireblocks and Ondo. Frank La Salla, DTCC President, described the activation as “the culmination of years of work” advancing regulated digital securities.
Dual Blockchain Architecture Powers Platform
The platform currently operates through Canton Network alongside DTCC’s proprietary Besu blockchain infrastructure. This dual-network design permits institutions to leverage approved digital rails while keeping underlying securities within DTC’s custody framework. DTCC aims to integrate additional blockchain networks throughout 2027.
The activation arrives as corporations pursue enhanced regulatory clarity for digital equities. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev recently advocated for improved regulatory certainty surrounding tokenized securities within American markets. DTC’s platform functions under established regulatory frameworks.
Regulatory Approval Preceded Operational Deployment
During December 2025, the US Securities and Exchange Commission issued DTC a three-year no-action relief arrangement. The approval encompasses select Russell 1000 constituents, leading index exchange-traded funds and US Treasury instruments. The initial deployment features a more limited securities selection.
The expanding tokenization sector continues testing digital securities for collateral applications. On October 27, Lynq and ZeroBeta revealed tokenized Treasury collateral offerings on Avalanche targeting institutional borrowing and trading activities. During July, DTCC conducted live transaction testing with over 30 institutions utilizing tokenized instruments, encompassing Treasury trades, equity transfers, and securities lending operations.
