Shares of D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) climbed 7.1% in premarket activity Monday following news of an enhanced collaboration with telecommunications powerhouse AT&T (T).
The enhanced agreement will see AT&T integrate D-Wave’s annealing quantum computing systems into expanded segments of its network infrastructure, specifically targeting outage identification and traffic flow optimization.
The partnership between the two firms isn’t new. AT&T had already been utilizing D-Wave’s quantum solutions on a smaller scale, including one instance where network optimization time was slashed from 60 minutes to just under 15 seconds.
The broadened scope represents a significant escalation in AT&T’s quantum commitment. According to AT&T’s estimates, the technology deployment could eliminate approximately 12 million hours of customer downtime.
The announcement created positive momentum throughout the quantum computing industry. IonQ (IONQ) advanced 3.8%, Rigetti Computing (RGTI) climbed 3.4%, and Quantinuum (QNT) increased 2.8%.
QBTS shares had touched double-digit percentage gains earlier during the trading session before moderating to the 7.1% advance.
Real-World Applications Drive Market Confidence
For D-Wave, securing enterprise-scale agreements like the AT&T expansion represents a critical validation of its commercial strategy. The firm has also announced collaborations with Anduril and Davidson Technologies in recent months.
Chief Executive Alan Baratz noted that Anduril’s participation at D-Wave’s user conference this year “really changed the view of the U.S. government.”
AT&T ranks among America’s largest telecommunications providers, serving approximately 74 million postpaid subscribers and 17 million prepaid accounts. The company’s endorsement provides meaningful validation for investors seeking evidence of practical quantum computing implementation.
D-Wave established itself as a pioneer in annealing quantum computing, an architectural approach designed specifically for optimization challenges. The company maintains its focus on this specialty as competitive pressures intensify across the quantum landscape.
Strategic Acquisition Opens New Market Opportunities
D-Wave’s ambitions extend beyond annealing technology. The company completed its acquisition of Quantum Circuits this year, signaling a strategic re-entry into gate-based quantum computing — the methodology employed by competitors like IBM.
Plans for this acquisition were initially disclosed in 2021. The transaction has now been finalized.
D-Wave unveiled a technical development roadmap for gate-model architectures in June. The company aims to deliver a system executing more than one million operations by 2032.
Gate-model architectures offer greater versatility across diverse computational challenges, positioning D-Wave to capture a larger share of the evolving quantum computing marketplace.
