Key Highlights
- Base network from Coinbase has introduced Base MCP, enabling AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude to interface with cryptocurrency wallets.
- Through conversational commands, users can transfer assets, exchange tokens, monitor balances and engage with decentralized finance platforms.
- Initial integration includes DeFi platforms such as Uniswap, Morpho, Moonwell and Avantis.
- User authorization is mandatory for all operations — AI systems never gain access to wallet private keys.
- The underlying x402 agentic payment infrastructure, which Base MCP builds upon, has recorded only $1.1 million in transaction volume during the last 30 days.
The Layer 2 Ethereum solution from Coinbase, known as Base, has unveiled Base MCP, an innovative integration that enables artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT and Claude to communicate with cryptocurrency wallets and decentralized finance applications.
Base MCP operates through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open framework designed to facilitate secure connections between AI platforms and external applications.
Through natural language requests, users can instruct an AI agent to execute transfers, perform token swaps, retrieve balance information or examine past transactions — entirely through conversational interfaces, eliminating the need for conventional crypto applications.
The initial release supports multiple DeFi protocols operating on Base’s infrastructure. Supported platforms encompass the lending services Morpho and Moonwell, the decentralized trading venue Uniswap, and the perpetual contracts platform Avantis. Additional integrations include Aerodrome, Bankr and Virtuals.
Transaction Execution Process
When users issue commands, the AI platform suggests a corresponding action within the chat environment. The Base wallet interface subsequently appears in a separate window, allowing users to either approve or reject the proposed transaction.
AI agents maintain no custody of private keys. Each operation follows the identical verification procedure that users encounter with standard Base account interactions. Furthermore, transaction outcomes are previewed through simulation before user approval.
Lincoln Murr, who oversees AI Product development at Coinbase, emphasized that the Base Account remains accessible across platforms. He distinguished it from “isolated agentic wallets confined to terminal environments,” noting that transaction records, historical data and portfolio information remain synchronized across the AI interface and the Base application.
Base positioned this release as advancement toward AI-integrated web experiences. The organization expressed conviction that conversational agent interfaces will emerge as a primary method for users to explore and utilize blockchain applications moving forward.
Development Phase and Security Considerations
Base MCP simultaneously advances adoption of the x402 protocol, an AI payment framework Coinbase introduced in May 2025. Murr characterized MCP as a “refined interface” built atop existing application programming interfaces.
Combined with x402, this technology aims to facilitate microtransactions executed by AI agents. Nevertheless, x402 remains in nascent stages. Information from x402scan indicates the protocol handled merely $1.1 million in transaction volume throughout the previous 30-day period.
The deployment of AI agents for cryptocurrency transactions has attracted scrutiny. Recent academic research from Google and multiple universities cautioned that AI agents should be regarded as potentially vulnerable system elements. The researchers emphasized that agents must maintain clear boundaries between operational instructions and external data to prevent exploitation through concealed malicious commands.
Recently, the developer platform Socket identified malware targeting cryptocurrency programmers. This malicious software embedded covert instructions designed to compromise AI-powered development tools.
While Base has not addressed these particular security discoveries directly, the organization stated that all Base MCP transactions undergo its established user verification protocol before any asset movement occurs.
